Addiction

Two Addiction Wish Lists

Those who abuse substances and those who love them wish for different things.

Recently I came across a wish list written by individuals who abuse alcohol and substances.

  1. We wish we could get sober without the overpowering feeling of withdrawal.
  2. We wish we could silence the voice of addiction.
  3. We wish we weren’t such a disappointment.
  4. We wish we had enough strength to ask for help.
  5. We wish we were weren’t manipulative liars.
  6. We wish we had never hurt you.
  7. We wish we weren’t consumed by fear.
  8. We wish we could remember what it means to be happy.
  9. We wish someone would care enough to comfort us.

No doubt that those who abuse substances experience much sadness, regret, and pain. But so do family and friends who love them. Here’s a list for them.

  1. We wish we could live without chronic stress (link).
  2. We wish we could silence the voice of hopelessness.
  3. We wish we weren’t ashamed.
  4. We wish we had enough strength to stop enabling.
  5. We wish we didn’t believe your lies.
  6. We wish we hadn’t said things to hurt you.
  7. We wish we didn’t fear that you might die.
  8. We wish we could be happy again.
  9. We wish we could comfort and help you heal.

Most of all, we wish you cared enough about yourself to join the 23 million in recovery (link). And we hope and pray that you're heading in the direction.
