Christian Behl, Ph.D., is a Professor of Pathobiochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) Mainz, Germany, and the Director of the Institute of Pathobiochemistry at the University Medical Center of the JGU Mainz. He received his Doctorate in Natural Sciences in the field of Neurobiology from the University of Würzburg, Germany. He first dipped his toes into Alzheimer’s disease research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, U.S., where he became fully immersed in the field. After his time in California, he combined neurodegeneration with endocrinology and aging research at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry in Munich, Germany. His current scientific work in Mainz focuses on proteostasis and the cellular degradation mechanism "autophagy" in the context of age-associated neurodegeneration. Christian is the author of a couple of books. Most recently, his book Alzheimer’s Disease Research: What Has Guided Research So Far and Why It Is High Time for a Paradigm Shift was published in which he advocates for broadening the view on Alzheimer’s disease.
