Joe Biden Screwed up Yesterday

He was rude, out of line, and failed an opportunity to earn more fans.

I was waiting for someone in the media to say it today, but nobody did, so I will: In yesterday's town hall meeting in Iowa, Joe Biden was rude, out of line, and possibly alienated potential voters instead of garnering further support, which he needs to attain a clear lead over close and climbing competitors.

What happened?

At the public town hall meeting in New Hampton, Iowa, a man stood up and questioned Biden about his son's business in Ukraine, how he came to have that job with no relevant experience, and said something along the lines of Biden being no better than Trump (implying corruption). In response, Biden hurled a series of insults at the man, calling him "sedentary," "too old to vote for me," a "damned liar," and (this has been denied by Biden, but can be clearly heard in the video footage) "fat." Wow. Additionally, most bizarrely, Biden challenged the man to a push-up contest.

Biden's behavior in this town hall meeting is extremely disappointing. The questioner was well within his rights to ask a question about this mysterious and ongoing story about Hunter Biden's doings in Ukraine.

Furthermore, the questioner was not rude. He was critical, yes, and he was even provocative, too, but not rude and completely justified in wondering what a lot of the country is wondering as well. What Biden could have said, and in my opinion, should have said, was: "Great question. I'm glad you asked it because I know this question will come up again and again during my campaign, so let me set the record straight..." and given his short and poignant side of the story.

Instead, he attacked the questioner with a verbal assault of personal insults, looking all the while like he was ready to throw a punch. Come to think of it, he acted just like Trump acts when anyone disagrees with him. What a shame. Yet I did hear Biden lauded by some in the media for being "strong" and "defending his son" and "coming alive." What a bunch of malarkey.

Our next president needs to be more philosophical in the sense of being open to criticism and responding to critics with dignity and respect, not personal insults and anger; that's never productive. The questioner was focusing on Biden's integrity, motives, and questionable foreign connections—all legitimate questions of someone who wants to be the president of the United States. Sound familiar?
