Over the years, some of the most psychologically scintillating events I’ve been aware of have come out of The Helix Center for Interdisciplinary Investigation.
This NYC-based organization stands “against the trivialization of thought and the balkanization within and between the sciences and the arts.” Their solution: bring leaders together from across the aforementioned science and the arts, then help them to communicate in imaginative and productive new ways.
They put their money where their mouth is by putting on some fascinating programming. For example, if I can, I’ll be in the audience for the next edition of their “Responses” series, where poets read each other’s poetry aloud, then comment on their selections. Coming June 14th: Patrick Rosal and Jean Valentine.
Or for the psych fans among us, how about an encore to last October’s “Warburg Symposium: Art, Neuroscience, and Psychoanalysis”, where Aby Warburg’s preoccupations with memory went seriously under the microscope.
Many of these intriguing events are free and open to the public, all the more reason to consider attending the Helix Center Benefit at Ginny’s Supper Club of Red Rooster Harlem, happening on Sunday, June 1st. The famed Chef Marcus Samuelsson’s cuisine will be on call, along with a wine tasting guided by French sommelier Jean-Luc Le Dû, magic by Mark Mitton, plus music and dancing. That’s a great evening, all in the name of supporting a forward-thinking 501(c)(3) organization.
If you can’t make it on June 1st, at the very least hit the home page and sign up for their mailing list. Something at the Helix Center is bound to draw you out.
