Can You Identify the Tragedy in This Story?

Another example of misplaced media sympathies

In China, there is a restriction on the number of children citizens may have. A recent story on Yahoo (sent to me by Christine and David - thanks!) reviewed the some of the implications of that one-child policy, including:

  • Girl fetuses are far more likely to be aborted than boy fetuses
  • Women are often abducted
  • There is rampant trafficking of women
  • Forced prostitution is not uncommon
  • Millions of Chinese men are single

Which of these story lines did Yahoo consider most worthy of featuring in its headline?

Okay, so that's too easy for Living Single readers. Of course, the real tragedy to Yahoo isn't any of the truly dire fates facing Chinese females; it is that millions of Chinese men are single. (Again, thanks to Christine for suggesting this insightful analysis of the story.)
