Face Case: Hunting for Help

The trickiest part of being a savvy shopper? Circumventing rigid store policies after you've paid for the wrong size or item. But the art of the return isn't just how you plead your case—first, you must I.D. the most affable salesperson in the store. We asked body-language expert Joe Navarro, PT blogger and author of Louder Than Words, for telltale signs that a clerk will be on your side.
Mirror, Mirror
We're more empathetic toward people who look and act like we do. Seek out someone who reminds you of yourself to start out on the right foot.
Open Face, Open Mind
A clerk's face will relax or tense up within tenths of a second of your approach. You will quickly sense whether she's laid-back or by-the-book, Navarro says.
Raise a Few Eyebrows
When you greet the employee, do her eyebrows arch upward? If so, proceed. Gravity-defying behaviors expend energy, indicating that the person cares.
Vocal Cues
When you confess in a hushed voice that you can't find your receipt, note whether or not the salesperson parrots your tone. Someone who's inclined to bend the rules will whisper back: a sign she's willing to conspire.
Straight for the Jugular Exposing
The sensitive neck demonstrates trust and empathy. As you speak, watch for the clerk's head tilt. Then go in for the killer, the refund.
