The Day the Music Died
Jam Master Jay and music's emotional impact
By Colin Allen published November 1, 2002 - last reviewed on June 9, 2016
The music industry lost one of its pioneers on the night of October
30, when Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC was shot to death in a Queens, New
York, recording studio at short range. A trailblazing DJ of Hip Hop, Jam
Master Jay, born Jason Mizell, was the driving force behind the group
that brought such songs as "Walk This Way" and "My Adidas" to life.
Mizell's death has evoked an emotional outpouring from his many
fans.
The connection between music and emotion is burgeoning field now
being explored by psychologists. For a sense of a more academic approach,
check out Music and Emotion: Theory and Research, a book by Patrik Juslin
of Sweden's Uppsala University and John Sloboda of the University of
Keele in the UK that covers much of the latest research.
In the instance of this tragic case, the music-emotion connection
can be easily experienced online. Click on the official Run-DMC website,

Mizell's murder. Below is a brief sampling from the Web site.
Just about the saddest news of 2002. Jay was just brilliant. He
will not be forgotten by music fans all over the world.

Rest in peace my friend, for today is a sad day for the world of
Hip Hop. God bless your family and friends.
We're not talking ground, we're not talking sky.
We're not talking low, we're not talking high.
We're not talking big, we're not talking small.
We want all of the people on off the wall.
We're not talking night, we're not talking day.
But we're talking 'bout Jam Master Jay.
One Love,
Eric

me...
RIP Jay....
My condolences to Jay's family, Run and Dee....

JMJ is someone who has worked so hard to bring peace, unity, and
education to the world of rap. He's not suppose to go out like this. This
is a true tragedy.

Beats to the rhyme.
We just lost our John Lennon-Jay was the backbone of the most
influential music act of the last 25 years. Let's not let him die in
vain. Stop the Violence. We're headed for self-destruction.
