My ideal client is interested in being challenged to become more self aware in order to enhance their overall wellbeing (physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and relationally). They are passionate about connecting with themselves and others in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner to enhance compassion for themselves and others. My job would be to help them overcome obstacles such as unhelpful thinking styles in order to break cycles of addiction, anxiety and depression. At times, they may need to consider relationship therapy with their partners and family members which would enrich themselves and their family members.

I work with clients to help them clarify and resolve the issues they want to focus on. I consider it important to be able to work with clients in a way that they perceive as helpful and bring in a variety of methods. I have a particular interest in how the body holds trauma from past events such as sexual abuse, violence, lack of early safe attachment and other traumatic events and how this can be released and new memories created. I work in a holistic way and can help clients explore ways to help with anxiety and depression such as mindfulness, breathwork, meditation and yoga.

Kia ora, maybe you are here because you are struggling with something in your life, feel stuck, or overwhelmed with difficulties. Whatever reason brought you here, you will find a caring and accepting space with a genuine interest in who you are. A psychotherapeutic relationship is different to any other relationship. It offers a non-judgmental space with a trained and experienced listener for the exploration of what troubles you. Since such purposeful exploration has the potential to transform one’s life, I believe that anyone who is curious about themselves can benefit from psychotherapy.

My approach combines professionalism, honesty, warmth and humour, without judgement. I take a holistic approach to mental health and wellbeing, exploring lifestyle and health, as well as emotional factors. During the first session, I will spend time getting to know you and what has brought you to counselling. We will then identify what the goals of therapy will be, and together, build a strong relationship in order to help you achieve these. I will take into consideration who you are as a person, what your needs are and tailor an individual approach.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
