Joanne works with clients facing change, complexity, stress and challenges in their careers and lives. Some have realised that what’s got them to where they are is no longer enough for their next step or to handle the challenges they face. Human brains are no work with professionals and leaders facing change, complexity, stress and challenges in their careers and lives. Some have realised that what’s got them to where they are is no longer enough for their next step or to handle the challenges they face. Human brains are not designed to work everything out on our own.

Stress, worry, burn-out, low mood, health challenges, sleep problems and grief can all impact on how we live and enjoy our lives. I'm Miriam, a health psychologist with well over a decade of clinical experience. I get to know my clients, their struggles and their strengths and work with them to help improve their well-being. I bring kindness and humour to my sessions (and the occasional F-bomb if that works for my clients!). I love using and sharing psychology strategies with my clients. I am based in Cambridge in the Waikato; I can see people in person or via Zoom.

I work with clients to help them clarify and resolve the issues they want to focus on. I consider it important to be able to work with clients in a way that they perceive as helpful and bring in a variety of methods. I have a particular interest in how the body holds trauma from past events such as sexual abuse, violence, lack of early safe attachment and other traumatic events and how this can be released and new memories created. I work in a holistic way and can help clients explore ways to help with anxiety and depression such as mindfulness, breathwork, meditation and yoga.

We all have things we struggle with. It is called being human. Sometimes our struggles affect our functioning, or maybe we just want life to feel a bit better than it currently does. Helping to make sense of small difficulties or massive challenges can be made easier with someone on your team to help.

As part of life, we all run into unexpected surprises, stresses, and losses. We change. These transitions can have an impact on our feelings, creating sometimes physical problems and/or impairing our ability to cope. Reaching out for help can be a scary thing for many people, and I am committed to help you access the resources you need to live life with integrity and quality. As a therapist, I believe in building a warm, trusting and collaborative relationship with you so that together we can get through your difficulties, developing and expanding your confidence in reaching your goals.

It can be really difficult to share your deepest concerns, fears and issues. It takes a lot of courage to make yourself vulnerable in this way; trusting another person with your ‘stuff’ can feel deeply uncomfortable and risky. With this in mind, I do my best to build a relationship with you (and your partner or partners) – in which you feel safe, accepted and respected. No matter why you have come to therapy, or what you may share during each session, my role is to try to help you – not judge you.

Sometimes things just happen ; other times, they've been happening for a long time. You may want to talk to someone to sort things out; perhaps, you've decided to close your mouth or don't know where to start. Wherever you are and whatever you decide, I hope you have realised one thing: standing alone is a brave choice; searching for help and integrating resources is a wise decision.

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
