Stress, worry, burn-out, low mood, health challenges, sleep problems and grief can all impact on how we live and enjoy our lives. I'm Miriam, a health psychologist with well over a decade of clinical experience. I get to know my clients, their struggles and their strengths and work with them to help improve their well-being. I bring kindness and humour to my sessions (and the occasional F-bomb if that works for my clients!). I love using and sharing psychology strategies with my clients. I am based in Cambridge in the Waikato; I can see people in person or via Zoom.

Waitlist for new clients
I enjoy working with clients who have challenges in their lives, are open to new approaches to managing those, and are motivated to work towards achieving change. Clients don't need to have all the answers but it is important that they are motivated to work together with me to find solutions. I enjoy working with clients who are open to exploring patterns in their thinking and behaviour, and who value the process of self growth. I particularly enjoy working with professionals and people who are able to attain achievements in their lives, but notice unhelpful life patterns which interfere with their goals or values.

I like to take time to listen and enjoy working in a warm, collaborative manner. My approach is based on evidence from research and my clinical experience working in general mental health, specialist psychotherapy and eating disorder services. But each person is the expert on their own situation - everyone is unique and needs something a bit different. I provide specialist psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, comprehensive treatment recommendations including medication for psychiatric difficulties e.g. depression, anxiety, autistic spectrum.

I'm amongst the most prolific mindfulness based therapists (ACT, CBT, RLT & DBT) in Australasia. Key to my approach: appropriate validation, compassionate challenging, relational emphasis, the Inner Child that runs our lives. In essence, to live is to have won the lottery; but the win doesn't last indefinitely. Adult ADHD, substance dependency, relationships, grief, anxiety, parenting, doubt, feeling stuck... I believe we are all on a moving wellness continuum, & support is a logical need. Concerned by the number of people struggling to afford therapy - I adjusted my fees for these challenging times: mention how you found me.

I am a registered psychotherapist with nearly 20 years experience. Prior to private practice I honed my skills working for the New Zealand Aids Foundation; my clients were gender diverse and included those affected by HIV. I also spent time as a research therapist teaching Problem Solving Therapy to participants in two projects - one relating to depression and suicide, the other to depression and diabetes. Grief and loss are my specialty as I believe grief is inherent in most of our life issues. I work with all general issues and ages from 18 upwards. As an ex-registered Nurse I welcome working with health challenges.

I specialise in demoralisation and depression that might come from loss of meaning and purpose, from a life-threatening diagnosis, a disability, or from spiritual disillusionment.
Kia ora and welcome. You will find a caring, accepting, and thoughtful space with a genuine interest in who you are. I am aiming to understand your struggles with compassion while appreciating your strengths. Each person is unique, and I adapt my therapeutic approach to meet your individual needs. Some people seek my help with the understanding that a longer commitment to psychotherapy is needed for deep and lasting change that has the potential to transform their life, while others come to address a specific issue within an otherwise fulfilling life, which can often be resolved in a shorter time.

I work with individuals, couples and polycules challenged by bereavement, divorce or separation, changes in status, identity & sexuality issues, and more.
It can be really difficult to share your deepest concerns, fears, and issues. Trusting another person with your ‘stuff’ can feel deeply uncomfortable and risky. With this in mind, I do my best to build a relationship with you (and your partner or partners) – in which you feel accepted and respected. No matter why you have come to therapy, or what you may share during each session, my role is to support and help you make sense of what's going on for you. It is not to judge, or tell you what to do.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
