I work with people on their healing journey who are over 20yrs who are not finding meaning in their life struggles. It may be despondency, fear, difficulties in relationships, a lack of self-compassion and/or other issues that fuel their troubles. Within the therapeutic relationship we explore what's been previously unheard and unacknowledged to find a place of safety, ease and peace inside and out. Difficult feelings are signals to unmet needs, and together we explore and work through unfinished business and grief to arrive at needs being met, self-acceptance and previously untapped positive energy (prev as a Health Psychologist).

I find inspiration in working with people to discover the possibilities in their lives to experience fearlessness, expression, joy, love and freedom. Kia ora, I'm Jennifer Stewart (she/her) and I work with those deep, thorny emotional wounds that we often refer to as trauma or complex trauma. Sometimes these wounds are caused by big, dramatic events and sometimes they're created by the many smaller injuries that can result from not being fully seen, supported, or understood by those around us. These wounds can leave us feeling stuck, out of control, or unable to realise our full potential. We may feel easily triggered/anxious or numb/shut down. We may struggle with setting boundaries, low self esteem, substance use, self harm, or be targeted for relationship/narcissistic abuse.

UNIQUE I don’t believe in “one solution fits all”. So I do an initial assessment and get to know you and your therapy goals. I train in different methods and techniques and tailor the session to your needs. HOLISTIC My approach to well-being and happiness is holistic. I look at the different elements in your life and your environment to better understand where you are at right now and what you need. I work on being present, mindful, and accepting. EMPOWERING I believe in giving people tools to apply in their lives outside of the therapy room. I like to give people the autonomy to make choices and perfect their reflective skills.

Kiaora. I am looking forward to meeting and working with you on finding your authentic self. I like to encourage you to become curious about yourself and where your thoughts and emotions come from. Or how you can cope with the problems that arise from everyday living. Life can really throw some punches and often you are not given a choice. My role is to be there for you, encouraging exploration and change and an ability to ride out the waves.

Feminist Counsellors

How does feminist therapy work?

Feminist therapy sessions are not only personal but often cultural or political in nature, as the approach is based on the belief that people are affected by, and often struggle with, cultural and societal norms and biases, and need to move beyond those external pressures or stressors to tap their own confidence and engage more fully in their own identity. Sessions may therefore include discussions of sexism, diversity, and gender issues and talk of steps toward greater empowerment for patients who believe they have been silenced and seek to raise their voices.

What are examples of feminist therapy techniques?

Along with traditional talk therapy and analysis, a feminist therapist may employ techniques such as role-playing and assertiveness training to help clients build their self-esteem so that they feel they can act freely, and not based on cultural expectations or gender roles dictated by others. A feminist therapist may also engage in bibliotherapy, offering suggested readings on gender identity or social power inequities as they work toward viewing mental-health concerns through a broad cultural lens before focusing on how they affect the individual. Somatic therapy techniques, with an emphasis on body awareness, self-compassion, and mindfulness practices are also often part of feminist therapist practice.

How long does feminist therapy last?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for feminist therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. It may take some time to become comfortable discussing personal issues, but once a client feels they can do so, they could expect therapy to last for a number of months, typically including at least 12 sessions.

Does feminist therapy work?

As a relatively recent therapeutic technique, there is not yet a body of evidence proving the efficacy of feminist therapy. However, the approach is based on proven core principles of talk therapy, with a particular emphasis on developing a therapeutic relationship based on equality and authentic connection between therapist and client and discovering and building on clients’ personal strengths to help them gain a greater sense of personal power and agency.
