I am a registered clinical psychologist holding a PhD in psychology. My practice is based in Whangārei, but I also provide telehealth services. As a psychologist I take a collaborative and client-centered approach, aiming to make psychology accessible, approachable, and non-intimidating. It’s not uncommon for people to experience some fear around working with a psychologist, and I prioritize putting that fear at ease and supporting clients to develop strategies to overcome their difficulties.

I have a special interest in Artist & Creative Wellbeing, Navigating Separation & Non-suicidal Self Injury.
Kia ora, I'm Sheena (she/her). If you are feeling stuck, it can sometimes be hard to see choices and options. A specific event or transition may be impacting you. It could be difficulties in relationships. Or, anxiety, depression, or something else, may be getting in the way of the life you want to live. I work with my clients, to create space between the person and the “problem”. Within this space we can explore how experiences and beliefs from your past may be shaping your present, identify how you would prefer your life to be, and discover the action that you can take to get there.

I have specialised in anger management, depression, suicidal ideation and addiction in the past.
I have worked with a wide range of clients over the 8 years I have been in the mental health field. I acknowledge that we are all individuals who require a unique approach to therapy. We will work collaboratively to develop the goals you want to achieve in therapy whether that be developing concrete skills to use in your everyday life or delving deeper into the root causes of your mental health issues. I will be there to guide you and support you in the ways you need. I believe everyone can benefit from therapy if that's improving an already positive life or uncovering the reasons why life feels more difficult than it should be.

As a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years experience, I work hard with my clients to understand and decode the language of emotions. I help with everything from "problems of living" such as workplace stress, challenges associated with injuries, relationship problems, grief and loss to more serious conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma and dissociations that require more advanced training. As an ACC therapist, I help people thrive after sexual abuse, childhood abuse or neglect, and family violence. I also enjoy working with private clients to navigate the challenges that come withprofessional and business success.

If you are considering psychological therapy, we are here to give you a brief overview of how the process works, what to anticipate, and how to make the most of your sessions. Please contact me directly to see if I am the right person to help you. CBT and ACT are modern, well-structured, and time-limited therapy approaches. The first session typically follows a structured process, where I ask a series of questions to gain a comprehensive understanding of the key psychological processes that may be contributing to your distress. At the end of this session, I often provide a verbal summary to ensure that it resonates with you.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.
Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
