Kia ora! I bring a sensitive and intuitive approach to counselling, that is authentic, non-judgmental and empathetic. Many experiences in our lives have an impact on our well-being, such as work pressures, family and relationship challenges, loss, trauma, abuse, and unmet needs in childhood. Each one of us will be affected differently. I provide a safe space for you to feel supported and cared for while processing difficult experiences and emotions.

I believe that addiction is a primary disease and that a person's other issues will stem from this fundamental problem. Therefore it's important to treat the addiction first. People with addiction often use alcohol and other drugs or behaviours to 'cope'. In the beginning the substance or the behaviour (such as sex addiction) was the 'solution', but after a while it became the problem. My approach is to offer therapy that is focused on a new, results-focused solution. The goal is offering my clients 'tools' so that they can change behaviour that is causing problems in their lives.

If you have been feeling lonely, sad or anxious, we can share a safe space where you can tell me your concerns. The main purpose of therapy is generating deep awareness of one's own personality and behaviour, understand about your inner world (thoughts, emotions, feelings), inquiring how our past affects our present. With this understanding one can move onto learning skills in order to manage emotions and behaviour. The therapeutic approach I use depends on the client's needs and resources available, with a strong foundation on a trauma-informed approach.

I have worked with a wide range of clients over the 8 years I have been in the mental health field. I acknowledge that we are all individuals who require a unique approach to therapy. We will work collaboratively to develop the goals you want to achieve in therapy whether that be developing concrete skills to use in your everyday life or delving deeper into the root causes of your mental health issues. I will be there to guide you and support you in the ways you need. I believe everyone can benefit from therapy if that's improving an already positive life or uncovering the reasons why life feels more difficult than it should be.

How lovely to find me, I’m Specialist Therapist Joy, and I’ve been in the industry for a decade now. I invest a lot into research, and into integrative healthcare, and am Harvard Medical School Educated. Distress doesn’t discriminate, and mental health exists for everyone. I’ve been a client and clinician in both public and private health, and both have virtues and vices, however I thrive in the diversity of being Internationally Licensed. I invest excellence back into my clients, and am highly empathic. Fascinated by how and why, and if you’re feeling scared to reach out-I felt scared when I needed help too. Quality care provided!

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
