I am a Nelson-based Psychotherapist offering short-term and long-term psychotherapy for adults, children and young people. My approach to working in therapy relies mainly on psychodynamic theories; meaning that I believe our early experiences (such as those encountered during our childhood and adolescence) have a significant impact on us. We may search for patterns in your life, to better understand what may be causing and perpetuating your problems. In long-term therapy it is crucial that you come to trust me, to share these often very personal memories and experiences.

Kia ora, I'm Jennifer Stewart (she/her) and I work with those deep, thorny emotional wounds that we often refer to as trauma or complex trauma. Sometimes these wounds are caused by big, dramatic events and sometimes they're created by the many smaller injuries that can result from not being fully seen, supported, or understood by those around us. These wounds can leave us feeling stuck, out of control, or unable to realise our full potential. We may feel easily triggered/anxious or numb/shut down. We may struggle with setting boundaries, low self esteem, substance use, self harm, or be targeted for relationship/narcissistic abuse.

Kia ora, I'm Paola. In therapy, change comes in waves and cycles, like with the tides. I provide my clients a safe and professional environment to navigate those therapeutic tides in the smoothest way possible. I bring to the therapeutic process competence, clarity and clinical discernment for the client to be able to dive safely in the deep waters of personal transformation. As Bessel van der Kolk notes, trauma is specifically an event that overwhelms the central nervous system, altering the way we process and recall memories. “Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then," he adds. "It's the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside people.” I am a well-established health professional who has dedicated my professional life working on releasing trauma in a natural, nurturing way, returning my clients to their natural state of wholeness. I call this "The Journey Home". I work from a neuroscience perspective. Harmonizing all aspects of our being Mind, Body and Soul

IFS is a complete, cutting-edge form of individual growth and therapy.
Kia ora, my name is Glen, I'm a fully qualified therapist with extensive training in Internal Family Systems (IFS) with IFSCA and have become part of their training team. I know it can be hard to find the right therapist. You are inviting someone into your inner world and that requires the courage to be vulnerable. It is a privilege to be part of my clients' journeys, it is sacred to me, and I value the opportunity greatly. Your courage to reach out and be vulnerable will be met safely and with respect, a space to be seen, heard and understood. A space where healing can happen.

People who come to see me are usually experiencing grief, depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety or anger. Some have experienced past abuse and have a history of trauma. We relate much of this to their early relationship experiences. By working through these attachment issues, we learn how to better regulate extreme emotions.

However we grow up, childhood experience creates habits and expectations that shape our adult selves. Often these habits seem to get in our way. What once kept us safe may now cause us pain, inhibition, depression, addiction and more. Therapy begins with the experience of being heard, without judgement. The client is the expert on their own way of living. So I ask them to teach me about themselves, while I try to get a feeling for the things that frustrate them and how they might find the freedom to live richer, more satisfying lives.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
