I am a Nelson-based Psychotherapist offering short-term and long-term psychotherapy for adults, children and young people. My approach to working in therapy relies mainly on psychodynamic theories; meaning that I believe our early experiences (such as those encountered during our childhood and adolescence) have a significant impact on us. We may search for patterns in your life, to better understand what may be causing and perpetuating your problems. In long-term therapy it is crucial that you come to trust me, to share these often very personal memories and experiences.

The journey through life is often defined by many challenges that can weigh us down in unexpected ways. Whether we are feeling anxious or depressed, are navigating relationship issues, a difficult transition, struggling with unresolved trauma, or unhelpful behaviour patterns we do not need to do it alone. Sometimes this journey requires support so we can find our way back to a greater sense of balance and well-being.

Kia ora, I'm Jennifer Stewart (she/her) and I work with those deep, thorny emotional wounds that we often refer to as trauma or complex trauma. Sometimes these wounds are caused by big, dramatic events and sometimes they're created by the many smaller injuries that can result from not being fully seen, supported, or understood by those around us. These wounds can leave us feeling stuck, out of control, or unable to realise our full potential. We may feel easily triggered/anxious or numb/shut down. We may struggle with setting boundaries, low self esteem, substance use, self harm, or be targeted for relationship/narcissistic abuse.

As Bessel van der Kolk notes, trauma is specifically an event that overwhelms the central nervous system, altering the way we process and recall memories. “Trauma is not the story of something that happened back then," he adds. "It's the current imprint of that pain, horror, and fear living inside people.” I am a well-established health professional who has dedicated my professional life working on releasing trauma in a natural, nurturing way, returning my clients to their natural state of wholeness. I call this "The Journey Home". I work from a neuroscience perspective. Harmonizing all aspects of our being Mind, Body and Soul

I offer a warm, accepting, and confidential space where you feel listened to. I have experience supporting people with wide-ranging issues including; relationship challenges, feeling disconnected, navigating life changes, loss, identity struggles, and low self-worth; and people who identify as highly sensitive or neurodiverse. Psychotherapy allows us to explore why we feel and behave the way we do and can help us learn to manage our emotions. Developing an understanding of ourselves and our patterns can give us new perspectives, help us make meaningful changes, and may help us accept things we can’t change.

Attachment-based Counsellors
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
