I understand the value of needing a space that provides the freedom to say how it is and receive validation of what that person is experiencing. People sometimes hesitate to engage with a therapist due to thoughts of “I don’t have it that bad”, “Maybe the therapist will think I shouldn’t be there.” In my 20 years of practice, I have never thought there was a person that couldn’t benefit from a safe, therapeutic space to process through their thoughts, emotions, and life experience. I honour any person that turns up to begin the courageous journey of having a deeper look at who they are. Together, taking into account what you’ve experienced, we can find ways to help you with whatever it is that you may be facing.

As a clinical arts therapist (AThR) working with adolescents and adults I offer an alternative to talk therapy and counselling. When we can’t find the words to talk about our concerns, arts therapy provides an alternative pathway to discover what is troubling us. Being "good at art" is not important in arts therapy - the process is our focus not the product. For people with trauma histories our sessions will also focus on nervous system regulation and how to manage states of fight, flight, freeze and fawn. Engaging with creative processes invites presence and helps reduce nervous system dysregulation.

I see individuals for a wide number of needs. I generally see clients above the age of 18. People come to counselling because they want changes in their lives and are unsure how to make those changes. Often they are stuck in stories or habits of the past , or traumas have locked them into unhelpful ways of being. People use therapy to achieve those goals and then move on.

During my 17 years in practice, I've come to appreciate people seek therapy for hugely diverse reasons. However I believe a common thread among us all, is the aspiration to be the best version of ourselves possible. It continues to be a profound privilege to walk beside other human beings on this journey. My intention is to create a safe and supportive space where clients feel truely seen and heard. I'm dedicated to helping my clients heal and ultimately cultivate a more positive sense of self and feel empowered to effect meaningful change

Men's Issues. Addictions and compulsions. Substance abuse, pornography, excessive anger. I like working with men ready to confront destructive self-defeating behaviors, who are challenged by addiction and other mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, anti-social behavior, anger, and PTSD. A person will respond emotionally once the mind gives meaning to the stimulus. I explain the reaction sequence and how it leads to the authorizing thought. This perpetuates the pattern of damaging behaviour.

I have emotionally supported hundreds of children through difficult moments for many years. Having studied in the USA, UK and NZ and worked with the children of the Christchurch Earthquakes for several years, I have been privileged to learn from and work with some very inspiring and resilient people. This knowledge was used to volunteer as crisis responder and as an in-person Youthline counsellor amongst other roles. Recently, I was employed as a Child and Adolescent Counsellor serving 13 South Otago area primary and intermediate schools. I now operate my own Private Practice in a beautiful and healing setting in Whakamarama.

A few therapy appointments with me can help to get you through a specific situation such as a traumatic loss, injury, relationship crisis or a major decision. We can also transform deeper problems, such as mood issues, unresolved trauma, or school, work, family stress with longer term work together. I recognize you are investing in therapy and the intention is that we quickly identify the difficulties you bring and give you strategies to improve your life. Many people value the relationship we build and come back for top-ups of support when needed, either face to face or online.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
