A few therapy appointments with me can help to get you through a specific situation such as a traumatic loss, injury, relationship crisis or a major decision. We can also transform deeper problems, such as mood issues, unresolved trauma, or school, work, family stress with longer term work together. I recognize you are investing in therapy and the intention is that we quickly identify the difficulties you bring and give you strategies to improve your life. Many people value the relationship we build and come back for top-ups of support when needed, either face to face or online.

I have a lot of life experience and faced many challenging events and trauma.
Making that first contact to talk to someone can often be a daunting and overwhelming experience! I can assure you that once you have taken that step you will feel a sense of relief, vulnerable, but empowered too.

I help people rediscover their strengths, passions and purpose and find meaning, joy and happiness in their lives. Most of us experience a moment in our lives where we stop and take stock. This may come as a result of a big shock, the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a job or some other trauma that shakes us to our very core. Or it may just be a gnawing sense that there is something more to life than what you are currently experiencing. These big shocks or subtle gnawings can start to erode our sense of happiness and fulfilment. We may experience depression, sadness, a sense of isolation, confusion or feel deeply overwhelmed.

Ideal clients could be suffering from disappointing life experiences, an unfair chance at life and those who are needing awhi, encouragement and support. They can be feeling sad or down, confused, have a reduced ability to concentrate, fearful, mood swings, feelings of guilt, withdrawal, loneliness, tiredness, low energy or have trouble sleeping. Understanding these issues by listening, identifying their needs and determine some goals may help formulate changing circumstances for a better future of growth and prosperity; a balanced life with whānau, friends and work situations.

Many people find themselves struggling with difficult feelings, painful experiences and a sense of not living the life they want. When the things that used to work stop working, it's hard to know what to do. We can feel very stuck, but perhaps the idea of things changing is daunting too.

I am experienced in EMDR therapy which may be suitable to address trauma wounds and self-limiting beliefs.
People sometimes hesitate to engage with a therapist due to thoughts of “I don’t have it that bad”, “Maybe the therapist will think I shouldn’t be there.” In my 20 years of practice, I have never thought there was a person that couldn’t benefit from a safe, therapeutic space to process through their thoughts, emotions, and life experience. I honour any person that turns up to begin the courageous journey of having a deeper look at who they are. Together, taking into account what you’ve experienced, we can find ways to help you with whatever it is that you may be facing.

I work with trauma and traumatic memories.
I work with children, young people, adults, and groups to support them to stand up to problems and develop preferred ways of being. I work with clients to identify, reflect upon, and achieve the hopes and goals that are important to them in their life and relationships. I provide professional supervision to practitioners in the fields of health and social practice (including counselling, occupational therapy, nursing, midwifery, social work, and human services etc). I believe that a collaborative, safe and respectful therapeutic relationship enhances emotion regulation and promotes self-awareness and resilience.

EMDR can be used to treat a range of difficulties, including PTSD, anxiety, depression, phobias, and low self-esteem.
Haere Mai, Welcome. I’m Daisy, and I am a certified EMDR therapist and member of EMDRNZ. I approach therapy from the understanding that our past and present are intrinsically linked, and that much of what causes us suffering in the here and now can be traced back to difficult experiences in our past. Anything that happens too much, too fast, too soon, or not enough can overwhelm our brain and lead to trauma. EMDR can be used as a tool to help jump-start our brain's natural healing process so that you can learn to live more fully in the present.

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
