You may be grappling with substance use disorders or addictive behaviours and carry the weight of past traumas that contribute to your emotional struggles. My counselling specialty is working with people who are having problems with their alcohol or other drug use. I also work with family and friends affected by someone else's use of alcohol or other drugs. If you are curious about the impact alcohol is having on your life, I offer a confidential space to assess the pros and cons and explore options for change. Initially the alcohol and/or other drugs were probably working well, soothing distress and providing confidence and connection. Sometimes it’s difficult to know whether the alcohol is still the solution or part of the problem. It helps to talk.

Kia ora & hello. If you are feeling lost or stuck, psychotherapy can be helpful in uncovering & untangling what may be happening for you. Psychotherapy can also help if you are experiencing relationship and/or communication difficulties; if you feel anxious or sad for no apparent reason; if you feel stressed or affected by life and/or world events; if you are interested in a deeper understanding of yourself. In nurturing self-awareness for the past & present, old stories & adaptive patterns, your conscious & unconscious, psychotherapy can help bring about understanding & lasting changes.

As a Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years experience, I work hard with my clients to understand and decode the language of emotions. I help with everything from "problems of living" such as workplace stress, challenges associated with injuries, relationship problems, grief and loss to more serious conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma and dissociations that require more advanced training. As an ACC therapist, I help people thrive after sexual abuse, childhood abuse or neglect, and family violence. I also enjoy working with private clients to navigate the challenges that come withprofessional and business success.

I am a Registered Psychotherapist and I work with adults over the age of 18. I offer individual therapy in a safe therapeutic space where individuals can explore and understand themselves better. Therapy is a pathway that can help individuals to become more in tune with their authentic selves and strengthen their relationships with others. Psychotherapy aims to add depth to life and relational experiences by assisting individuals to understand what is causing them mental distress. Through greater self-awareness and exploration, individuals are likely to experience an increase in emotional, professional, and relational growth.

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
