My overall approach is largely informed by the non-pathologising perspectives of Narrative Therapy (NT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Positive Psychology, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT).
It can be really difficult to share your deepest concerns, fears and issues. It takes a lot of courage to make yourself vulnerable in this way; trusting another person with your ‘stuff’ can feel deeply uncomfortable and risky. With this in mind, I do my best to build a relationship with you (and your partner or partners) – in which you feel safe, accepted and respected. No matter why you have come to therapy, or what you may share during each session, my role is to try to help you – not judge you.

It also draws upon a number of therapeutic frameworks such as Mindfulness, Person-centred, Positive Psychology, Strengths based, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
Successful counselling is based on the quality of the relationship between myself (the therapist) and you (the client). My approach is based on deep respect and non-judgemental acceptance for all people I work with. Utilising an element of creativity within therapy enables you to speak through art making, and reflection, because sometimes spoken words don’t exist for your experience. In my practice I offer counselling and arts therapy, professional supervision and coaching, and career development.

If you need help for your life transitions, decision making, goal planning, coaching, and basically moving forward in your life, I can help you using a holistic and strength based, positive and uplifting approach. Our past is dead data, so going through them over and over doesn’t help much. It just gives us clues to re-evaluate and move forward with clarity of mind and SMART action plan.

Do you have concerns about your child’s behaviour, self-esteem, anger, anxiety, or general state of mind? It’s not uncommon. And it can cause a lot of stress to your whole family. A little help at the right time can make a big difference. I’ll chat with you at the beginning of each session, then work individually with your child, then meet with you to discuss next steps. In the first session, I focus on helping your child feel at ease, starting to build a relationship and discovering what your child wants to get out of seeing me. Then, as we work together, I like to make the sessions light-hearted, positive and fun.

Hi, I'm a registered psychologist with 20 years experience of working with clients. I take a holistic approach (spiritual, emotional, physical and cognitive), and recognise that we all have intersecting identities. I'm interested in my clients’ individual story and believe that they are the expert on themselves. We are all unique and it's a privilege to work with a client to support their sense of self and wellbeing. I offer short and long term therapy from a lens that is cross cultural and draws upon a range of approaches and theories. I am also registered with ACC (New Zealand) as a provider (ISSC Treatment).

Being flexible in the way that we think and being open to change is essential for developing and strengthening positive psychological wellbeing. Being psychologically fit is the foundation of a vital life. We all have ingrained habits, beliefs, rules, behaviours and ways of thinking about the world. Some of these provide us the tools to navigate our lives in a positive and flexible way and some can be severely restrictive, impacting us all in unique ways, from complex mental health issues to performance related difficulties in our work and relationships.

On your best days, you want to and believe you can change the world, that is why you went into a helping profession. You are dedicated to your work caring for others. But it is hard work, and sometimes you struggle. Recently it feels like it has been more struggle than changing the world. You are beginning to wonder about burnout - does that explain your exhaustion? The stresses and strains of the global pandemic have taken their toll. Your work demands are overwhelming and you carry cares and worries for your clients home with you, and carry cares and worries about your family to work with you. You wonder about your career.

Joanne Meldrum is a Counsellor and specialised practicing Psychiatric Nurse. The tools that Joanne provide are based on the four dimensions of well-being - Mind, Body, Social and Spirit. These dimensions are carefully considered when facilitating healing with clients, with the intention of improving self-awareness, confidence and compassion. When we make meaning of conflicting emotions, behaviour and thought processes, and acknowledge the effect of the pattern, we reclaim value. Joannes approach is to provide a framework and skills to practice that influences acceptance and responsibility to face new aspects of loving.

Sometimes things just happen ; other times, they've been happening for a long time. You may want to talk to someone to sort things out; perhaps, you've decided to close your mouth or don't know where to start. Wherever you are and whatever you decide, I hope you have realised one thing: standing alone is a brave choice; searching for help and integrating resources is a wise decision.

Positive Psychology Counsellors

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviours differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
