Trained in the UK and having practised in NZ for over 15 years ago, I bring lived experience as a queer parent, and inter-generational migrant with racialised identity.
Hi, I am a registered HCPC practitioner psychologist (UK) and registered psychologist (NZ) who has been working with clients for over 20 years. I consider a strong rapport and therapeutic relationship to be critical to facilitating positive impacts with my client and take a holistic approach (spiritual, emotional, physical and cognitive) to establishing and maintaining this. I appreciate that we all have intersecting identities and given the current dominant culture, part of these can be oppressed; either consciously or unconsciously. This can often be painful, and I offer a space for all parts of you to seen, heard and valued.

Kia ora! I'm Mark. I use he/him/his pronouns. I have a strong belief that everyone can have a sense of their identity, regardless of their sexuality, where they can embrace their unique life pathway without judgment. I feel strongly about supporting the empowerment of women, I desire to create an environment of care and support for male clients who struggle with the notion that they too can express their vulnerability, sensitivity, and empathy. As a gay man, I feel I have a history and depth of experience to understand the different challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people, as well as other societal minority groups.

Having been trained not only as a psychotherapist but also as a Yoga psychology teacher, I believe that the events we have been through are part of our soul's journey towards wholeness. By learning from our experiences and transcending our suffering, we become more conscious, awaken our inner light, find our purpose, and discover our qualities and gifts. My approach combines the sciences behind Western psychologies (psychodynamic, transpersonal, etc.) with the wisdom behind Eastern traditions/ philosophies (Yoga psychology, mindfulness, etc). If that resonates with you, I am happy to assist you on your journey.

I'm amongst the most prolific mindfulness based therapists (ACT, CBT, RLT & DBT) in Australasia. Key to my approach: appropriate validation, compassionate challenging, relational emphasis, the Inner Child that runs our lives. We're all aware that to live is to have won the lottery, whatsmore, the win doesn't last indefinitely. Adult ADHD, substance dependency, relationships, grief, anxiety, depression, parenting, doubt, feeling stuck... I believe we are all on a moving wellness continuum, support from time to time. Concerned by the number of people struggling to afford therapy - I have adjusted my fees for these challenging times

I believe therapy is one of the best gifts we can give to our present, past and future selves. To our children, and those close to us. As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I facilitate an exploration of how your life experiences might be alive in your current struggles and relationships. Often the ways we learnt to manage difficulty may now hinder, rather than help us.

LGBTQ Counsellors

Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?

Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.

Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.

How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?

You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?

Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.

Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?

While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
