In our current world people are expected to enter into a competitive and turbulent world of rapid changes. Skills that are needed would be flexibility, versatility, innovation, creativity, self motivation (to enable a person to make his or her own choices and act on them) social skills (this includes respecting one self as well as understanding and respecting others and their values and cultures), emotionally competent (to be compassionate towards others, to understand and manage uncomfortable emotions), courage and coand confidence (to be responsible to be able to learn from their mistakes and to keep on trying).

I’ve been a Counsellor and Family Therapist for over 20 years now. What I love about this work is helping people unpack their challenges and figure out how they can be more compassionate with themselves, more peaceful in their relationships and enjoy life more fully. Most people walk in somewhat nervously not knowing what to expect but the feedback is that it’s a relief to be able to talk freely, see themselves more kindly and pick up some new skills that work for them.

Do you have concerns about your child’s behaviour, self-esteem, anger, anxiety, or general state of mind? It’s not uncommon. And it can cause a lot of stress to your whole family. A little help at the right time can make a big difference. I’ll chat with you at the beginning of each session, then work individually with your child, then meet with you to discuss next steps. In the first session, I focus on helping your child feel at ease, starting to build a relationship and discovering what your child wants to get out of seeing me. Then, as we work together, I like to make the sessions light-hearted, positive and fun.

My clinical background is in Psychodynamic psychotherapy with emphasis on Attachment theory and human development across the life span. Having an in-depth understanding of how our early beginnings impact our view of self, life, and relationships, assists me to support my clients toward developing empathy and compassion for themselves and others. I believe this can be an integral factor in the healing process and in attaining a sense of personal freedom.

It can be really difficult to share your deepest concerns, fears, and issues. Trusting another person with your ‘stuff’ can feel deeply uncomfortable and risky. With this in mind, I do my best to build a relationship with you (and your partner or partners) – in which you feel accepted and respected. No matter why you have come to therapy, or what you may share during each session, my role is to support and help you make sense of what's going on for you. It is not to judge, or tell you what to do.

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?
No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.
What therapy types help with behavioural issues?
Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.
How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?
Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.
How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?
Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
