Stephen Murphy-Shigematsu, Ed.D., is a clinical and cultural psychologist in the Stanford University School of Medicine's program in Medical Humanities, Center for Asian Health Research and Education, and Stanford Living Education. He is the founding director of the Heartfulness Lab, which explores and designs mindful, compassionate, responsible practices for enhancing education, well-being, and the environment.

His work in the U.S. and Japan creates transformative educational spaces for mindful, appreciative, and connected inquiry to address global and local issues in education and health. Through teaching, research, counseling, and training, he focuses on crossing human and institutional borders to connectedness and wholeness through respect for diverse forms of knowledge, worldviews, and ways of being.

He was a graduate of Harvard University, a professor at The University of Tokyo, a Fulbright scholar, an APA fellow, and president of the Nichibei Care mental health organization. His books in English include From Mindfulness to Heartfulness: Transforming Self and Society with Compassion; When Half is Whole: Multiethnic Asian American Identities; Multicultural Encounters: Case Narratives from a Counseling Practice; and Synergy, Healing and Empowerment: Insights from Cultural Diversity (with Richard Katz).
