Mark Van Vugt Ph.D.

Mark van Vugt is a Professor of Evolutionary, Work and Organizational Psychology at the VU University Amsterdam and a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford. He is co-director of ther Amsterdam LeadershipLab. He is the author of more than 150 scientific publications in which he applies evolutionary approaches to understand human organizational behavior. He is interested in themes such as leadership, power, status, altruism, cooperation, and intergroup conflict. Insights from his research have been applied in various practical domains such as leadership, management development, environmental sustainability, philanthropy, intergroup war and peacemaking. He is a prolific author and regular contributor to national and international television, radio, and news papers such as the BBC, Channel Four, ABC, CNN, Nature, the New Scientist, the Times, Daily Telegraph, de Volkskrant and Trouw. Professor Van Vugt's has worked with a number of government and business organisations to advice and conduct research, including the Dutch and European Parliament, UK Charity Commission, US Office for Naval Research, Southern Water, Southampton Football Club, Rank Xerox, ING, GITP, LTP and FC Twente. Professor Van Vugt is member of the team that won the prestigious £1.2 million British Academy grant "From Lucy to Language: The Archaeology of the Social Brain." He is author and co-author of several books including popular sciences book on evolutionary mismatch and evolutionary leadership theory. He also co-wrote a student text on applying psychology. Mark van Vugt is editor of various journals in psychology and leadership, and is member of the Academy of Management (AOM), European Association for Social Psychology (EASP), the Society of Experimental Social Psychology (SESP), the European Human Behavior and Evolution Associaton (founding member; EHBEA), and Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES).
