Jonathan Balcombe Ph.D.
Jonathan Balcombe, Ph.D., has written scientific papers and lay articles on animal behavior, humane education, and animal research. In 2000, the Humane Society Press released his first book, The Use of Animals in Higher Education: Problems, Alternatives and Recommendations. His second book, Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good was released by Macmillan in May 2006 and is also available in five foreign translations. Balcombe's third book is Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals (Palgrave Macmillan), andThe Exultant Ark: A Pictorial Tour of Animal Pleasure (University of California Press) was released in May 2011. Dr. Balcombe is the Department Chair of Animal Studies for Humane Society University. In his spare time he enjoys nature-watching, biking, piano, vegan cooking and trying to understand his two cats. Balcombe also works as an independent consultant and lives near Washington, D.C. with his wife and daughter.
