Dan Neuharth, Ph.D., MFT, is a best-selling author and licensed marriage and family therapist with 25 years of experience working with individuals, couples, families, and groups.
In his private psychotherapy practice in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Neuharth specializes in working with clients who are negatively affected by people with Narcissistic Personality Disorder or a narcissistic style. He also does attachment-based couples counseling, and holds licenses as a marriage and family therapist in California, Florida, Texas, and Virginia.
Dr. Neuharth wrote the national bestseller If You Had Controlling Parents: How to Make Peace with Your Past and Take Your Place in the World, based on original research with adults raised in narcissistic and controlling family systems. His second book, Secrets You Keep From Yourself: How To Stop Sabotaging Your Happiness, explores how to overcome self-deception and self-sabotaging behavior. His books have been translated into Japanese, French, Chinese, Danish, and Korean.
He has appeared on national media including Oprah, Good Morning America, and CNN. He is a frequent speaker to both consumer and professional audiences on unhealthy narcissism.
Dr. Neuharth holds a doctorate in clinical psychology and master’s degrees in both clinical psychology and journalism. He is an award-winning journalist with print, broadcast, and online media experience and has taught writing and communications at the universities of Florida, Hawaii, San Francisco, and San Diego State.
