Amy Smith Ph.D., LMFT, CFLE
Amy Smith, Ph.D., LMFT, CFLE, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Colorado who works with individuals, couples, and families, specializing in the areas of grief and loss, navigating expected and unexpected life transitions, and promoting healthy communication. She is passionate about supporting healthy relationships and helping people find meaning and connection in their lives, even when their lives have not gone according to plan.
She utilizes evidence-based modalities in her work and integrates research and science into the art of therapy. Her research background has focused on promoting health relationships through effective communication and the awareness of relational danger signs for both adult romantic relationships and parent-child relationships as well as systemic impacts on the effectiveness of therapy, including the therapeutic alliance.
In addition to her work as a therapist and researcher, she helps to educate the next generation of therapists and human service workers to support change through helping to develop compassionate, knowledgeable, inclusive, and skilled service providers. She is an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT)-approved supervisor and has taught undergraduate and graduate courses related to human development, family studies, grief and loss, and therapeutic skills at institutions including Colorado State University, the University of Colorado Denver, the University of Denver, the Community College of Aurora, and the Colorado Community College Online System. She is committed to the accessibility of information and providing high-quality education to students and the community.
