The aim of counseling and psychotherapy is for the client to understand their own internal mind and frame of reference, leading to a better understanding of their sense of self and learning how to nurture and nourish the self. The client learns that only they, can change their own behaviour not anyone else, considering how they unlearn old behaviours and exploring ways to learn more healthy ones. Collaborating on realistic goal setting can be empowering for the client. Gaining an understanding of Family Dynamics and examining the clients own attachment style to their primary carers is also considered.
I am trained in Person-centred and humanistic approaches which operate on the humanistic belief that the client is inherently driven toward and has the capacity for self-growth within themselves. Collaborating with the client to find the most suitable approach tailored to their specific needs at that time is key to bring about positive therapeutic change.
It is my role as therapist to provide the core conditions empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard towards each client. Building rapport and trust in the therapeutic relationship is key. It is my experience that when a client feels safe in their environment they can begin to share their story and voice their concerns and difficulties.
