I am an experienced, accredited Psychotherapist in private practice since 2011. My focus is seeing the person as unfolding at different stages along life's journey. Sometimes along the way we can be knocked sideways. Failure ,loss ,abuse, relationship issues or bad choices can leave us experiencing stress, loss ,anxiety and depression . Early intervention is essential and my role as psychotherapist is to listen and enable you to gain insight. Any issue when talked about and explored in a supportive non judgemental therapeutic relationship where you are understood and supported will bring about positive change.

Or maybe you are the parent of an autistic child and are unsure how to navigate the complex and difficult emotions of learning about your child's difference.
I provide a safe and non-judgemental environment for you to explore and process difficulties that may be having a profound impact on the way you live your life today. Often early childhood experiences influence how we see the world, our behaviour and the way we form and maintain relationships. Counselling can help you understand and process these challenges and develop healthier behaviour patterns. It can also help with the implementation of safe boundaries, necessary for optimal wellbeing.

CBT is about learning new skills and ways of being to help you tackle life’s challenges and break free from pain and suffering.
I treat a variety of common mental health difficulties and life challenges (e.g. mood and anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, complex trauma, relationships issues, stress, low self-esteem, perfectionist traits). Some people aren’t quite sure what’s going on for them, but something just doesn’t feel right. Whatever your struggle is, I want to help you to get your life on track, break out of unhelpful patterns of behaviour, and find meaning and satisfaction in life. I can offer you a safe and non-judgmental space to explore what it is that’s causing you difficulty, and an evidence-based approach to help you to finally move forward.

Paula holds BA (Hons) Degree in Psychotherapy and Counselling from Dublin Business School and is accredited to The Irish Association of Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy ( IAHIP). Paula’s approach to her work is integrative and humanistic, a module that encourages the distinctly human quality of choice and creativity and emphasizes the hopeful view of human beings and their ability to be self-determining. I use the analogy of the therapist being the person supporting the client by holding the blank canvas while the clients create their many works of art.

I appreciate that it takes great courage to ask for help. Acknowledging this, I can provide a safe and confidential space whereby collaboratively, through integrative and creative approaches, we can strive to resolve and change in thought processes, encourage self growth and establish long term solutions for re-occurring problems. Having previous experience working with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, anger, trauma, abuse, grief, loss and relationship issues, I believe that healing takes place in slow, small steps forward.

Whether you are seeking relief from emotional suffering or, have a deep desire for growth within yourself and with others, the counselling relationship can support you. The empathy, honesty and unconditional acceptance of a skilled therapist can provide a sometimes challenging, but always safe and nurturing environment. I have in depth experience with families, neurodivergent individuals, children with behaviour of concern and adolescents who are struggling with the transition towards adulthood. I accept and affirm diversity in all forms.

Education and Learning Disabilities Counsellors

How effective is treatment for learning disabilities?

When initiated early and tailored to a child’s specific needs, learning disability treatment can be quite effective at helping a child cope with their disability, though its exact efficacy may depend on the severity of symptoms and whether comorbid disorders exist. Less is known about treatment initiated in adulthood, but it is certainly possible that an adult with a learning disability will see some improvement—or at the very least, identify workarounds and accommodations that could make symptoms less burdensome in day-to-day life.

When should someone seek treatment for learning disabilities?

It’s best to seek treatment as early as possible. Because learning disabilities often go unnoticed until a child starts school, or even until they’re a few years along, regular check-ins with teachers and doctors can help parents determine whether children are meeting milestones and keeping up with peers or whether an evaluation for learning disabilities may be warranted. And although earlier is always better, it’s never too late to be evaluated for learning disabilities and to seek treatment.

What happens if learning disabilities are left untreated?

Undiagnosed and untreated learning disabilities can be a source of significant frustration and shame for a child, who may feel that their challenges stem from a lack of intelligence or willpower. Such feelings can trigger low self-esteem, depression, or anxiety, which may push a child toward risky behaviors, including substance use. In adulthood, untreated learning disabilities can interfere with career success, and lingering feelings of self-doubt and shame can negatively affect someone’s mental health.

Are there medications for learning disabilities?

Currently, there are no medications designed to treat specific learning disabilities such as dysgraphia or dyscalculia. However, someone with a learning disability may be prescribed medication for a comorbid condition, such as anxiety, depression, or ADHD, which may have positive downstream effects on their learning disability; for example, a child with both ADHD and dyslexia may find that they’re better able to focus on their reading exercises after being prescribed a stimulant medication.
