Connection is fundamental to our wellbeing and survival. When we feel disconnected from ourselves, others and the world, it can be a lonely existence. When we struggle to express ourselves it can feel like we are pretending to be someone else. The fears and worries of anxiety that can take over your mind, can be tamed and better understood. In therapy we can work as a team to help you understand yourself better, and improve your sense of self.

From a Theroethical viewpoint while my core approach is Person Centered and largely inspired by the teaching of Dr Carl Rogers, In keeping with this approach my work is largely motivated by my belief that each of us is capable of reaching our own potential if given the right direction, thus healing ourselves. Being an Integrative Therapist I also have the option of drawing on a number of Therapies depending on the clients’ needs. I find that people come to therapy for help for a variety of reasons throughout life. Some come for just a few sessions to talk about a particular issue they may have while others come more long term.

I believe the relationship between a client and their therapist is the cornerstone of what therapy is about. My approach values the whole person, mind, body, and soul, thoughts, feelings, and emotions. A relationship that is built on trust, honesty, and respect in a confidential space. I also work in areas of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Family Systems. My goal is to work together with a client to create a counselling journey that is right for you in total confidence.

If you are an adult and have experienced abuse and/or neglect during your early years, then this is an area I have a particular interest in. Equally, if you are looking to gain insight into how early experience comes to shape and mould our adult selves, then perhaps I can help. It may be that you are experiencing a lack of joy or meaning in life and are looking for a safe and confidential space to explore your inner world. You may have anxiety, depression, obsessional thoughts, addictions, relational issues, loneliness, or it may simply be that you are attempting to situate yourself meaningfully into the greater social fabric

Medication Management Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to manage medications?

One of the most effective ways a patient can manage their medications is to keep a list of each drug and dosage they take. Such a list can be helpful in keeping to their schedule and can also be something they bring to their psychiatrist or other physician so that the healthcare provider has a clear picture of what they’re taking and in what quantity. Using a pill organiser can be useful for memory and organisation. Patients should discuss their medications and their effects at every appointment.

What are the risks if medications are not managed properly?

A suboptimal approach to medication management can lead to potentially harmful health outcomes. Most psychiatric drugs have side effects, and if a patient is not aware of them, they may seek additional medical help or over the counter or prescription drugs to treat the side effects, which may have its own side effects, a process called “prescription cascade.” Another risk to disorganisation is that a psychiatrist without full knowledge of a patient’s regimen could prescribe a medication that should not be mixed with a patient’s existing drugs.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to get help managing their medications?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing medication management as a tool for improving their life and avoiding dangerous side effects. Offering specific examples of an individual’s failure to properly manage their medication regimen should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to break management down into parts, and there are several apps that can be used to organize which drugs are ingested, when they need to be refilled, and how they should be stored.

Are there natural treatments that can replace medications?

While there are many medications that can be vital to mental health, there are some natural lifestyle changes that can help reduce the need for drugs. Regular exercise, good sleep habits, a healthy diet, and therapy can all go a long way in symptom relief. Psychiatric medications typically treat symptoms but do not necessarily treat the cause of the condition. Many clinicians consider medications an adjunct to treatment rather than a treatment in and of itself.
