Sometimes it is easier to talk with someone outside the family, outside the social circle. I work collaboratively and compassionately with adolescents and adults. My aim is to provide a safe, confidential space where the person feels heard and seen, and most importantly can hear themselves, look at what they want to change to feel happier in themselves, discover their needs and unmet needs and to learn to tap into their inner and external resources.

I have seen the benefits of using art and talk therapy as a way of guiding clients back to their internal world after many years ignoring themselves and focusing on others.
Hello, my name is Ciara McKeown, Art Therapist and owner of Unfurl Art Therapy. I am a fully qualified therapist with an MSc in Creative Arts Psychotherapy and BA (Hons) in Integrative Counselling and Art Therapy. Clients come to me who are grieving, feeling depressed, anxious, or don't know what they feel but know something isn't right. I also work with clients entangled in toxic relationships, particularly Narcissistic Abuse. Often these clients feel stuck. We work together to get them unstuck!

Sometimes art or creative process may be introduced to help express and process what emerges.
When things feel too much it is hard to respond creatively to life's challenges. Our natural tendency is to seek safety in the known and we may fall into old defensive patterns. This can be at the he art of a feeling of stuck-ness in our lives and may show up in anxiety, depression, anger, relationship difficulties, and the feeling that life is more of a struggle than it needs to be. Mindfulness based psychotherapy offers a non-judgemental exploration of feelings, thoughts and perceptions in present moment, and allows a reflection on what may no longer be helpful.

To aid and assist your understanding of mental health issues that present, facilitated in a safe non judgemental space as you journey on path of well-being, enabling your goals to be achieved, meeting your needs in the process. You do not need to have an artistic ability or background, just a willingness to allow the creative process to assist .

This work is enhanced by working with modalities such as visualisation technicques, meditation, energy healing, sand tray work and art therapy.
People come along because they feel depressed, anxious or stressed out by something in particular or by life in general. Sometimes people come along because they have afraid of something, worry about relationships or friendships or worry about how they are managing in life. Whatever it is that is troubling you, giving some time to focus on your internal work of dreams and wishes is always helpful. Through my expertise in psychological theories and also spirituality, I have developed a practice which combines traditional talk therapy with mindfulness and energy healing and which is extremely benefical and healing.

Images can help clients to explore these behaviour’s and work together with Art Psychotherapy to unravel the unknown and realise new choices.
When we are suffering, it is common to concentrate on all that is wrong or negative in our lives. Counselling can offer a place to gently explore these negative beliefs and understand the patterns we have learned to survive in the world. Using a non-judgmental person-centred approach, I collaborate with the client to best meet their individual needs and goals.

My job as your therapist is to co-operate with and enhance your journey towards wholeness. This is achieved by lovingly offering skills and experience, alongside knowledge of the terrain of personal development and creativity. I hold the assumption that people generally have the ability to understand themselves, are clever, honest, self-directed and able to solve their own problems. I'm here to support that assumption by reflecting back the light I see in you.

Art Therapy Counsellors

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
