A client describes her experience of therapy: 'For the first time I felt heard and understood. My feelings and thoughts were of importance and I felt accepted and validated in being me. No one had ever told me that it was okay to have my own experiences, to be sad, angry, frustrated, etc. And now through the experience of therapy I can accept who I am and I am embracing change in new and exciting ways'. Underpinning all my work is the belief that change and healing can only take place within relationship and within and through the experience of the therapeutic encounter an individual comes home to their true potential

Hello, I am Dr. Bláithín Mac Mahon. I am a psychologist, with a PsyD in Clinical Psychology, and founder of Thrive Psychology- an online therapy practice offering Zoom appointments. While I work with all adults of all ages and experiences, my speciality has been working with young adults ( late teens into late 30’s), addressing the concerns that often arise during these life stages. I find people often come to me stating they just want to talk things out with someone, feeling perhaps stressed, overwhelmed, frustrated, down, and/or a general sense of feeling stuck. (Please visit my website for more information.)

I work with women that feel stuck, particularly in relationships or professional situations that have them feeling overwhelmed, overlooked, unappreciated or undervalued. I help them release any latent beliefs or stories that are holding them back and reconnect to their most powerful and successful selves with a renewed sense of identity, a vision for how they'd like their life to be and the ability to reach their potential to get there.

I strongly believe that the client is the expert. The client is the one who lives inside the self and has had the experiences. They know when something resonates with them in a therapy session. They know what they can and cannot cope with. They know the areas and issues that need to be addressed. I believe that there is a natural predisposition towards health in everyone. People just need to gain a confidence in listening to what their body, mind and emotions are telling them. I listen to what the client brings to me and their goals. This may be short-term counselling, or a more processing through psychotherapy.

I guide and support people on a journey of self discovery and self acceptance so that they can develop a better relationship with themselves. I offer a safe container for people to be seen and heard as they begin to reclaim and re–emerge as their true selves. A space to be you. Each person's story and journey is unique where I don’t believe in a “one size fits all”. Therefore I use different therapeutic approaches collaboratively with you to explore what best suits your needs.

Are you feeling anxious, confused, stressed, depressed, lost, not able to cope with what is happening to you or has your world been turned upside down? Perhaps you have concerns about family or intimate relationships; care responsibilities; new life situations; bereavement/loss; college; work issues; or low levels of confidence and self-esteem. Life feels overwhelming and you’re not sure about the way forward. Or perhaps you just have a vague sense that something isn’t right? That your problems aren’t ‘big enough’ for counselling.

We all struggle with the challenges and stressors of modern life from time to time. Sometimes we need a safe, warm environment and a professional and kind listening ear to help us make sense of our world. I believe that we all have the right answers for ourselves. What we need is for someone to ask the right questions.

I believe the relationship between a client and their therapist is the cornerstone of what therapy is about. My approach values the whole person, mind, body, and soul, thoughts, feelings, and emotions. A relationship that is built on trust, honesty, and respect in a confidential space. I use an integrative humanistic approach. My work is primarily grounded on Person-centered therapy, choice theory, mindfulness, and existential therapies. I also work in areas of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Family Systems. My goal is to work together with a client to create a counselling journey that is right for you in total confidence.

At any time life's demands can become overwhelming. Clients benefit from the time and space to explore the thought processes and behaviours that are keeping them trapped in negative cycles.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
