I treat a variety of common mental health difficulties and life challenges (e.g. mood and anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, complex trauma, relationships issues, stress, low self-esteem, perfectionist traits). Some people aren’t quite sure what’s going on for them, but something just doesn’t feel right. Whatever your struggle is, I want to help you to get your life on track, break out of unhelpful patterns of behaviour, and find meaning and satisfaction in life. I can offer you a safe and non-judgmental space to explore what it is that’s causing you difficulty, and an evidence-based approach to help you to finally move forward.

The most important words you may ever say are “I need help” As humans, we all need the help of others at times of difficulty. Perhaps you have been trying to deal with life’s difficulties, but still feel stuck with certain aspects of your journey. Maybe it’s time to explore your inner world with a professional who will listen non-judgementally & with empathy to help you live your best life. I’m interested in people & the experiences that have shaped them. I understand how crippling anxiety & depression can be & that relationship breakdowns can be devastating. I can offer you a safe environment to explore what life has thrown at you

Welcome. I am an Accredited (IACP) Counsellor and Psychotherapist, qualified to work with both Adults and Adolescents. My previous career as a critical care nurse supports my work in this area as it broadens my understanding of the many needs of my client. Difficulties and distress can arise in anyone's life at any time. Even with the support of family and friends, it may still be difficult to cope and function effectively. Sometimes it may be easier to talk with an independent person. In therapy I can offer a safe, secure and empathic environment.

Deciding to come for counselling can often be a difficult and drawn-out process. It is often also a very rewarding and enriching experience leading to changes in one’s life that reduce distress and increase one’s ability to cope with difficulties and challenges. By it's nature the process involves engaging with uncomfortable aspects of oneself and our relationships that are challenging. The goal of the process is to increase self-knowledge, self-acceptance and self-compassion to enhance our capacity to relate to ourselves and others in healthier and more fulfilling ways.

Sometimes you might find yourself being really sensitive and feeling overwhelmed with emotions that are coming out of nowhere, often flying off the handle, or being tearful and upset. You might not be feeling yourself, like you are carrying a huge weight and you don’t know what it is or why. It might be that you feel really tense, and ‘on-edge’ and it’s difficult to relax. It can also be that you feel totally shut-off from others, detached and disconnected, feeling empty and numb. Life has lost its colour. Others constantly feel guilty, find it really hard to say no to others, and live in a constant state of never being good enough.

Hello and welcome. Are you stressed, lost, anxious? Life brings many experiences our way, some good and some bad. The emotional impact of these experiences can be frightening or confusing. Our family have a lot of influence on us, how we behave, how we talk, and how we communicate. Loss, grief, and anxiety are challenging. Processing our emotions is an essential part of living a healthy life.

There is no such thing as an ideal client. Every single one brings their own personal struggles, goals and expectations. Life is complicated as it is for adults, I am understanding and non-judgemental when it comes to adolescents. Modern life is definitely complex for them. My hopes and expectations is that I can give the best of me to help them work through and survive this stage of life as healthily and happily as possible.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
