I'm a therapist who values the potential within every individual. I believe that people hold the key to their own solutions, and I'm here to help them discover their inner resilience. I focus on working with the person, not just the presenting issues, and I'm dedicated to creating a supportive and nonjudgmental space. Together, we'll explore your thoughts and feelings, using thoughtful questions and active listening to uncover your strengths and remove any self-imposed barriers. My goal is to help you on the journey to living the life you desire.

Troubled, conflicted, anxious or distressed? Struggling with loss or identity issues? Feel a relationship is in difficulty or things are not going well at home, work or college? Perhaps you are struggling to cope after receiving a medical diagnosis or wondering why you became ill in the first place? Going to therapy allows you to talk about what you are experiencing, explore reasons, develop solutions and help you attain a stronger, more fulfilled and creative self. An important part is sharing your innermost thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgemental therapeutic relationship with a specially trained therapist.

Therapy provides an open space for a deep and broad exploration into the course and meaning of one’s life – it is about new choices and insights. The therapeutic relationship is the agent of change. Helping individuals to understand themselves better, and showing them how to ask the right questions, facilitates change. Thereby this in-depth approach incorporates the treatment of the individual behind the symptom, so that they do not have to carry the burden alone.

The Human Givens approach is a gentle, solution-focused, brief therapy which helps individuals find a solution to get their emotional needs met by using the resources they already have. By working together with my clients we can find ways for them to feel better after just one session. I work holistically, using the latest research from Neuroscience, Wisdom traditions, relaxation techniques, guided imagery and the wonderful resources my client already has. Together we can set a goal for therapy and work towards meeting that goal by creating achievable tasks between sessions. The therapy sessions last between 75-90 minutes.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
