Because we now know that continuous stress can seriously contribute to promoting illnesses as time goes by - I help my clients to take back control over their reactions to their life's stresses. Most of our life we run on auto-pilot because we think we are to busy to change, thus allowing our habits, behaviours, reactions to control us! I help you become more aware, to broaden your perspective, create more empowering options which are right for you. In the process you get to remember your strengths, achievements, talents, skills, to draw on helping you get out of the rut and propel you forward.

As a person centred Psychotherapist I offer a safe space for clients and couples to look at and talk about the issues they feel are preventing them moving forward with their lives and relationships. Sometimes life can feel overwhelming, we experience loss and change in our relationships, jobs, identity, family or health. It can feel difficult to find someone to talk to. I provide an understanding and non judgmental environment in which the issues clients face can be addressed.

Many people come to talk because they are feeling anxious, overtired, stressed. It is often thought that only people with really serious diagnosed illnesses benefit from psychotherapy, they do and I have many clients like that, however therapy is really useful for stressful times as well as diagnosed illnesses.

Counselling focuses on relieving the burden of mental health difficulties, where healing may occur through talking. Telling your story can have a powerful impact on your existence. Together we will try to understand your coping mechanisms and behavioural patterns, the hows and the whys of it. We will explore how upper past echoes through your present and how trauma may affect the body. Through talk therapy, you can gain a new perspective on your life, find balance and awareness and carry changes you may have found difficult to implement in the past.

Specialising in the treatment of anxiety-related behaviour, I work in partnership with children and their parents to provide effective, family-focused solutions for complex emotional, behavioural & social issues. My role as a behavioural psychologist lies in the application of evidence-based, compassion-focused practices that celebrate the human experience and all that it brings. My experiences as a child, adult and now mother of two with a visual impairment has afforded me deep insights into the value of positive role models and the need for appropriate nutriment of self-esteem in young people. The service I created is one I needed

People are all just trying their best, but it is very normal to struggle with life at times. I like helping people who are feeling stuck get unstuck. I like helping people see that they have the power to make something better from their life. I used to be a homebirth midwife, and I find myself drawn to people who are in big life transitions. Or knowing that there is a change needed that maybe is not yet clear. But much happiness comes from learning to truly appreciate what is real in your life today.

It can feel a bit daunting or even scary starting or resuming therapy and that's why I focus on creating a space that is warm and safe, to help you feel more comfortable figuring out what's troubling you and unpacking your feelings, thoughts and experiences. I love supporting people on their journey to better understand themselves and the root of their present difficulties, and helping them discover who they are beyond who they have learned to be through their life experiences and environment.

As a therapist, I believe in the transformative power of human connections on our overall well-being. I recognise that our relationships with others serve as the cornerstone of our physical and mental health. However, I also acknowledge that many of us struggle to find genuine ease and trust in these connections due to various life experiences, and perhaps have never been able to be fully at ease with other human beings. In my practice, I see my role as that of a facilitator, providing a safe and supportive space for clients to explore their obstacles and work towards overcoming them.

I approach my work with the belief that with compassionate care and acceptance, no matter how challenging our early lives have been, we all have a capacity for transformation and the potential to live a more enriched and fulfilling life. I believe that helping people to recognise and believe in their worth enables them to be more resilient in the face of challenges and difficult emotional experiences and to be able to make self-supportive and affirming choices.

How can I find a therapist in Dun Laoghaire?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, eircode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are accredited members of the main professional associations, mainly the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Most Psychologists are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement in Ireland, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Ireland. Psychologists have earned a doctoral degree in psychology and many are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a doctoral degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the IACP or ICP, they must complete a minimum of an NFQ Level 7 programme with 100 hours of clinical experience and a minimum of 450 hours of post-training clinical experience under clinical supervision.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in Ireland could cost between €50 – €90 when seeing a counsellor and €75 - €120 or more when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The National Counselling Service (NCS) is a government-funded service that provides short to medium term counselling and psychotherapy for free to individuals who have experienced trauma or abuse. The service can be accessed by GP referral or self-referral.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your eircode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the IACP, the ICP, or PSI are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others or when a child is in danger, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
