I am a qualified, accredited therapist working in North Dublin. Originally from England, I have lived in Dublin since 2006, raising my family here. I started my training in South Dublin in 2012, and my passion has taken me to research and develop a deep interest and understanding of Attachment. I believe having this understanding enhances my work with depression, anxiety, bereavement and grief, trauma and parent-adolescent work, in addition to the therapist-client relationship. It is also important for me to use my skills in other areas of my life and, as such I work have lectured at IICP and was a director with Empowerment Plus.

I work with clients who are experiencing Heightened Anxiety, Low mood/depression, Early parenting issues, Stress, Bereavement and loss.
Despite our best efforts, there are particular times when life can become difficult and situations can become overwhelming. It is in this place one often starts to consider the support found in Counselling and Psychotherapy. As Kubler-Ross wrote: People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.

My experience includes; loss/bereavement, family and/or parenting issues, trauma, anxiety, and depression.
Sandra strives to create a therapeutic environment grounded in empathy while clients embark on their journey of self-exploration and personal growth. Her approach to psychotherapy is rooted in the integration of person-centred and psychoanalytic approaches. She is mindful that each client is unique and tailors her therapeutic approach accordingly by incorporating, for example, CBT, Schema therapy and somatic techniques. So often with symptoms of anxiety and depression, vagus nerve dysregulation is an unseen enemy and Sandra uses the principles of polyvagal theory to help clients become more grounded and centred in the body.

If you build a house with no foundations, what would happen to the house? Most likely there would be a lot of pressure on the frame as it starts to slowly sink, wobble, or collapse over time. This ends up looking like burnout, anxiety, depression, pressure, overwhelm, or struggling in relationships (eg. parenting, partnership, friends). We will sift through what is adding this stress to your life while also collaborating to create strong foundations in your life that will ease the pressure while also allowing you to find fun and joy again. What would it feel like to be able to flow through life again with ease and control?

Parenting Counsellors

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
