There are times when our capacity to feel better, recover or move on with things can feel too difficult to do on our own. It can help to talk to someone outside of your family, friends and familiar relationships to begin to understand how you are feeling. Therapy is a process that can help you explore issues relating to challenging or traumatic life experiences. I can support you in re-discovering a sense of how you can relate to yourself and others in a more resourceful and empowering way. Giving yourself permission to accept support for where you are at is often the hardest thing to do and the most courageous.

Life can be challenging and can bring hardships, conflict and pain. Often people seek therapy at a moment of crisis where they want change in their lives. Psychotherapy offers the possibility for an individual to explore various aspects of their life and be listened to in a way that is rarely possible with family or friends. My experience includes working with psychiatric diagnoses, those affected by issues and symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression, bereavement, addiction, relationship issues, questions of gender and sexuality.

Hello and welcome. Are you stressed, lost, anxious? Life brings many experiences our way, some good and some bad. The emotional impact of these experiences can be frightening or confusing. Our family have a lot of influence on us, how we behave, how we talk, and how we communicate. Loss, grief, and anxiety are challenging. Processing our emotions is an essential part of living a healthy life.

Psychotherapy offers the possibility to explore various aspects of your life in a way that is rarely possible with family or friends. Psychotherapy offers a space where you can speak of your suffering and presents the opportunity to re-shape it. It can be a truly transformative experience where you can reflect on your experience in a confidential way.

I have trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy, dialectical CBT, attachment based (mentalisation) therapy, systemic family therapy, trauma-focussed therapy and emotional-focussed couples therapy.
I work with young people, individual adults and couples. At our initial consultation, I have two objectives: to assess whether we can work together as therapist and client, and also to assess what is the appropriate therapy to offer you. Therapy is work. I offer a carefully-bounded confidential space in which to speak of anxiety, depression, hopes and dreams. My principal mode of working is a talking therapy but where appropriate I may recommend coping strategies (e.g. for panic attacks) and psycho-education (e.g. books or podcasts). In return I expect you to attend weekly, speak freely, and pay promptly.

I have many years experience helping clients to develop their strengths for dealing with the many issues which crop up in today’s lives - in personal concerns, relationships with family, friends and colleagues.
You may need to unravel confusions in your life, unburden your worries and distress to an experienced non judgmental person who is empathetic and provides confidentiality. someone who has lived through many problems herself and can show survival. I am ready and able to help you.

I work those who are experiencing a sense of isolation or aloneness, people dealing with trying to find balance in their life, those struggling with how to be in their relationships, people going through difficult phases in life - illness in the family, bereavement, leaving home to be at university, the impact of a will, difficult parental relations, etc.
Therapy is an opportunity to begin to talk about what you are experiencing at the moment. The process of saying what is happening for you, and being met in that by somebody who wishes to better understand you, offers you the potential to begin to see your situation more clearly, increase your awareness and gain insight. I work in an integrative way bringing in the appropriate tools and techniques that our individual work together demands in the moment. My main way of working is psychodynamic. My aim is to help you to see yourself better.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
