One of best and accurate descriptions comes from Susie Orbach: “People come to therapy when avenues for understanding themselves or moving forward stall. They come because love has gone wrong, because they are frozen in unsatisfactory work or intimate relationships, because they have lost touch with themselves, because they are searching for authenticity, because they don’t know how to let go, because their life is falling in on them, because they have suffered events so bruising they don’t know how to assimilate them…The work of therapy is to open up on the levels of: feelings, words, and ideas "

There are times when our capacity to feel better, recover or move on with things can feel too difficult to do on our own. It can help to talk to someone outside of your family, friends and familiar relationships to begin to understand how you are feeling. Therapy is a process that can help you explore issues relating to challenging or traumatic life experiences. I can support you in re-discovering a sense of how you can relate to yourself and others in a more resourceful and empowering way. Giving yourself permission to accept support for where you are at is often the hardest thing to do and the most courageous.

Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety? Does it feel like your mind is always racing, making it hard to relax or feel at peace? Maybe you find yourself avoiding social situations, overthinking every interaction, or constantly worrying about your health or relationships. You might feel overwhelmed, isolated, and stuck—like anxiety is stopping you from living the life you want. If you’re neurodivergent, this can feel even more intense, leaving you exhausted by the constant effort to cope. I’m Sinead, and I work with teens, adults, and neurodivergent individuals who are struggling with anxiety in all its forms—

Our mental health is closely linked to the way we relate to ourselves and to others. It is therefore extremely important to work on the source of our distress, to make the effort to examine it, to understand its cause and thus to find our own tools for dealing with it. Personal and professional development involves hard and deep work that allows us to understand our unique way of dealing with daily challenges. My commitment is to accompany you on this journey, respecting your beliefs, validating your choices and revealing your contradictions.

It can feel a bit daunting or even scary starting or resuming therapy and that's why I focus on creating a space that is warm and safe, to help you feel more comfortable figuring out what's troubling you and unpacking your feelings, thoughts and experiences. I love supporting people on their journey to better understand themselves and the root of their present difficulties, and helping them discover who they are beyond who they have learned to be through their life experiences and environment.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
