Finding the right therapist is daunting. Don't let the darkness swallow you. Reach out, you will be surprised how much talking to someone can be a transformative experience. Therapy by its nature, should be non-judgemental, empathic and warm. This is how I practice.

People seek psychotherapy and counselling for different reasons. They may be in need of emotional and psychological support to help them through a time of crisis; they may feel stuck with some aspect of their life that they want to change; they may be carrying wounds from old life experiences that are continuing to cause pain; or they may simply want to become a better version of themselves. I offer a confidential, supported space where you can explore whatever it is that you need help with.

Life can be difficult at times. You may be stressed and anxious, you may feel helpless and depressed, or feel sad or feel unfulfilled or out of control of your own life. Your relationships may be suffering. You may be facing major crossroads in your life or you may feel desperate and not know how to go on. You feel alone and isolated. You would like some support during this difficult time, or to be able to talk to someone in a safe confidential and non-judgmental environment.

It can feel a bit daunting or even scary starting or resuming therapy and that's why I focus on creating a space that is warm and safe, to help you feel more comfortable figuring out what's troubling you and unpacking your feelings, thoughts and experiences. I love supporting people on their journey to better understand themselves and the root of their present difficulties, and helping them discover who they are beyond who they have learned to be through their life experiences and environment.

The Human Givens approach is a gentle, solution-focused, brief therapy which helps individuals find a solution to get their emotional needs met by using the resources they already have. By working together with my clients we can find ways for them to feel better after just one session. I work holistically, using the latest research from Neuroscience, Wisdom traditions, relaxation techniques, guided imagery and the wonderful resources my client already has. Together we can set a goal for therapy and work towards meeting that goal by creating achievable tasks between sessions. The therapy sessions last between 75-90 minutes.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
