I am a fully Accredited Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist who works with adults. I believe that by providing a confidential and safe environment can allow an individual to speak freely about their life and/or psychical suffering. This important work can provide insight into one’s relationships, life experiences and lead to the easing of psychical suffering. I place the individual’s unconscious in a privileged position within the work and I believe that it is through speaking that understanding can come about and change can take place.

I work with a variety of clients who are overwhelmed withnissues affecting them and who feel that they are unable to cope, or that the could cope better if they could find a way of dealing with things. Using the human givens framework helps us to look at all the things affecting them, and by understanding them and their consequences more, find new ways of getting their emotional needs met. By engaging with people in a compassionate and non judgemental way, together we can find strengths and resources that help us overcome the challenges that we have.

The Human Givens approach is a gentle, solution-focused, brief therapy which helps individuals find a solution to get their emotional needs met by using the resources they already have. By working together with my clients we can find ways for them to feel better after just one session. I work holistically, using the latest research from Neuroscience, Wisdom traditions, relaxation techniques, guided imagery and the wonderful resources my client already has. Together we can set a goal for therapy and work towards meeting that goal by creating achievable tasks between sessions. The therapy sessions last between 75-90 minutes.

Working in town I find over the years quite a variety of issues present. Relationships are always an area that interest me and for both men and women they can present problems whether with work colleagues or potential partners. Anxiety raises its ugly heard more and more and my success with helping clients deal with it is quite satisfactory. Family dynamics and sexual abuse sometimes go hand in hand and I have experienced in this area too.

Psychotherapy offers the possibility to explore various aspects of your life in a way that is rarely possible with family or friends. Psychotherapy offers a space where you can speak of your suffering and presents the opportunity to re-shape it. It can be a truly transformative experience where you can reflect on your experience in a confidential way.

Therapy is an opportunity to begin to talk about what you are experiencing at the moment. The process of saying what is happening for you, and being met in that by somebody who wishes to better understand you, offers you the potential to begin to see your situation more clearly, increase your awareness and gain insight. I work in an integrative way bringing in the appropriate tools and techniques that our individual work together demands in the moment. My main way of working is psychodynamic. My aim is to help you to see yourself better.

I initially attempt to provide a sense of ease in counseling sessions because before therapy can be productive it must, firstly, feel safe. From there, goals that the client might like to achieve naturally emerge in the conversation. These goals can be anything at all: from wishing to feel less anxious, sad, irritable or troubled, to addressing relationship difficulties at home or at work, to trying to better understand a feeling of being unfulfilled, thinking or feeling differently about our pasts or, in many cases, just to have a safe place to discuss anything at all in a confidential, non-judgemental setting.

One of best and accurate descriptions comes from Susie Orbach: “People come to therapy when avenues for understanding themselves or moving forward stall. They come because love has gone wrong, because they are frozen in unsatisfactory work or intimate relationships, because they have lost touch with themselves, because they are searching for authenticity, because they don’t know how to let go, because their life is falling in on them, because they have suffered events so bruising they don’t know how to assimilate them…The work of therapy is to open up on the levels of: feelings, words, and ideas "

Being human is not easy. It can be challenging to find something safe to rely on to when so much changes, sometimes without warning. Therapy provides a unique space to safely explore the painful parts of human experience, including difficulties with anxiety, depression or relationship issues, for example. Therapy can give the support and safety needed to explore and understand your experience, and often to reframe the beliefs, feelings and behaviours of your lived experience, so that ultimately you suffer less.

I welcome all clients regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Clients who have experienced traumatic episodes in their life. Clients who have felt they have always been on their own. They may have always felt that they have had no one to protect them, never felt loved or nurtured. Clients who feel they are totally disconnected with who they are. Such clients may feel they are totally lost and have no direction in their life. I welcome all such clients to my practice. Together we will find the reconnection to Self and in doing so find a purpose and goal in life.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Most Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are accredited members of the main professional associations, mainly the Irish Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) and the Irish Council for Psychotherapy (ICP). Most Psychologists are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement in Ireland, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and supervised, practical experience that enable them to do so in Ireland. Psychologists have earned a doctoral degree in psychology and many are accredited members of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a doctoral degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the IACP or ICP, they must complete a minimum of an NFQ Level 7 programme with 100 hours of clinical experience and a minimum of 450 hours of post-training clinical experience under clinical supervision.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in Ireland could cost between €50 – €90 when seeing a counsellor and €75 - €120 or more when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The National Counselling Service (NCS) is a government-funded service that provides short to medium term counselling and psychotherapy for free to individuals who have experienced trauma or abuse. The service can be accessed by GP referral or self-referral.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your eircode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the IACP, the ICP, or PSI are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there is the potential or known harm to the client or others or when a child is in danger, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
