We've all been there - that anxiety, that feeling of not being good enough, that fear of committing in a relationship. More often than not, these feelings and beliefs about ourselves can stem from our earliest relationships. If you are experiencing any of the above or are finding that you just want to make sense of your story, then therapy is a great place to start. I provide a supportive space, enabling clients to journey within, so they can effect positive change in their lives. Every client has different needs, so my approach is tailored to each client, ensuring that the work we do together is relevant to their story.

Nosce Te Ipsum. Therapy begins with a dialogue about what indeed brought the client into the therapeutic setting. Clients’ thoughts, feelings and experiences provide much of the fodder for a therapeutic dialogue. Much of the work in therapy involves making sense of these thoughts and emotions. The therapist educes the client’s stories; clients narrate and share them. This integrative framework provide the lens in which I listen and connect to the narratives and presenting issues of my clients. As the tempo takes its momentum, a gradual progression of humanistic kinship, trust and understanding between my client and I are entrenched.

You find life is a struggle. However, you have a feeling it does not need to be this way. You have tried various strategies and coping mechanisms, you have given your all and no matter how hard you try, you find yourself stuck again and again! Your mind is anxious about the future as you wonder whether you will be able to sustain such discomfort with life. Your mind also tends to dart back into the past, wondering regretfully about things you did or failed to do. A smooth and easy relationship with the here and now alludes you. You want to try something new. It is time to try 'change' through psychotherapy.

Unfortunately I am not taking on any new clients for the foreseeable future. I will update again should this change - Are you struggling with issues of self-worth and self-esteem? Perhaps growing up it was difficult to get your needs met or to develop a strong sense of self. As a result, you may experience issues of identity, confidence, addiction, anxiety or a sense of chronic loneliness or emptiness. Perhaps you very hard on yourself or you look to others to give you a feeling of being good enough? If so, you might seek a sense of worth through relationships, spirituality or perfectionism.

Now you can do this from the comfort of your home by video call or alternatively you may come to see me in person.

Seeking help during a challenging time can be difficult. Be confident that it is your inner strength that has guided you to reach out and seek support. In my experience, I have come to see that no issue is too big or too small; the difficulty comes in trying to overcome it alone. Allow me to provide a safe, confidential, supportive, non-judgemental space for you to talk about and explore the issues which you may be finding challenging or painful.

The process of art therapy involves self-discovery. It's not just about art, it's about exploring your emotions, experiences, and physical sensations and supporting your wellbeing. Nature and art aid in emotional regulation because they allows a person to put their emotions into physical expression that is outside of themselves. It is not about making the finished product but focusing on the creative process. It is during this time that self-expression can be explored. Art serves as a language, when words are difficulty to find. Fully accredited member of IACAT.

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
