Nosce Te Ipsum. Therapy begins with a dialogue about what indeed brought the client into the therapeutic setting. Clients’ thoughts, feelings and experiences provide much of the fodder for a therapeutic dialogue. Much of the work in therapy involves making sense of these thoughts and emotions. The therapist educes the client’s stories; clients narrate and share them. This integrative framework provide the lens in which I listen and connect to the narratives and presenting issues of my clients. As the tempo takes its momentum, a gradual progression of humanistic kinship, trust and understanding between my client and I are entrenched.

As a qualified Counsellor Psychotherapist, I believe that discovering the secrets of happiness isn’t just for a fortunate few—it’s a path we all walk. Throughout my personal and professional experiences, I’ve come to realize that no one sets out to be unhappy.Often we adapt to life’s challenges out of necessity, sometimes without even realizing it. But here’s the exciting part: everything we’ve learned, we can also unlearn. This means we have the power to reshape our journey towards peace, joy and fulfilment.I wholeheartedly believe that therapy is a transformative journey open to everyone seeking growth, healing, and self-discovery

As a therapist I have attended my own counselling throughout the years and I understand how difficult it is to take those first steps as a client. So well-done in taking the first steps in to therapy. You can expect a warm welcome from me, in a non-judgement, safe space where you will receive empathy and understanding, kindness and compassion. You don’t have to be alone.

The process of art therapy involves self-discovery. It's not just about art, it's about exploring your emotions, experiences, and physical sensations and supporting your wellbeing. Nature and art aid in emotional regulation because they allows a person to put their emotions into physical expression that is outside of themselves. It is not about making the finished product but focusing on the creative process. It is during this time that self-expression can be explored. Art serves as a language, when words are difficulty to find. Fully accredited member of IACAT.

Hello, thank you for visiting my counselling profile. I am Sophie, I am working as a Humanistic Integrative counsellor in Cork City Centre. I have been working with clients for several years now and I find this work deeply enriching. Relationship struggles are one of the most common reasons people come to counselling. This could be highlighted in the workplace, school, at home, or in our romantic relationships. I look to explore the deeper reasons for these struggles, be it trauma, anxiety, attachment-related negative experiences, anger or depression. You may also seek counselling due to a trauma in your adult life.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
