We often seek therapy guided by feelings of stuckness, anxiety, numbness, despair. In these moments, we tend to look out into the world and try to change everything and everyone so we can feel better. This is true for most of us. However, in therapy, with a presence of attuned and non-judgmental therapist, there is a possibility to look inside and focus on ourselves.

The process of art therapy involves self-discovery. It's not just about art, it's about exploring your emotions, experiences, and physical sensations and supporting your wellbeing. Nature and art aid in emotional regulation because they allows a person to put their emotions into physical expression that is outside of themselves. It is not about making the finished product but focusing on the creative process. It is during this time that self-expression can be explored. Art serves as a language, when words are difficulty to find. Fully accredited member of IACAT.

Nosce Te Ipsum. Therapy begins with a dialogue about what indeed brought the client into the therapeutic setting. Clients’ thoughts, feelings and experiences provide much of the fodder for a therapeutic dialogue. Much of the work in therapy involves making sense of these thoughts and emotions. The therapist educes the client’s stories; clients narrate and share them. This integrative framework provide the lens in which I listen and connect to the narratives and presenting issues of my clients. As the tempo takes its momentum, a gradual progression of humanistic kinship, trust and understanding between my client and I are entrenched.

Life may mean difficult or traumatic experiences, past or present, that can leave you feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, worried, overwhelmed, hopeless or unable to cope. Counselling can be a great support in these times, helping you make sense of your experiences, your feelings and your relationships.

You may not always be able to choose what happens in your life but you can choose how you respond to it. Talking to someone is the most important step you can take in that process of taking back control and beginning to heal.

I believe that a person’s individuality and uniqueness should be non-judgmentally embraced and when given the right tools and support, anyone can have the opportunity to thrive in their life. I work with individuals who are looking for counselling during a time in their lives that they feel they want or need support. I understand that we all experience unique events throughout our lives, therefore I adapt my approach to best suit the needs of the individual sitting in front of me.

I believe in supporting you to lead a more balanced life no matter what experiences you have had or what issues you are currently dealing with. Sometimes stressful or traumatic events can hamper our ability to cope with life’s challenges and leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck and worn out. If you are struggling with anxiety, depression, low self esteem, stress or processing trauma past or present, I will support you in your journey to finding your feet again. I have a deep appreciation for the wisdom of the body and tools that support working with instead of against ourselves.

My aim is to provide a compassonate space for clients where they feel listened to and understood in a real and deep way. "Behind each face there is a unique world that no one ese can see. This is the mystery of individuality. The shape of each soul is different. No one else feels your life the way you do. No one else sees or hears the world as your do" This is a quote I love and work from, written by the author and poet John O' Donoghue .

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
