Discover Your True Calling

Embark on a path toward purpose with these essential steps.

Key points

  • There are ways to unlock your full potential and find true meaning.
  • The first step to discovering more about your purpose in life is to reflect on your passions and interests.
  • These steps aren’t a beginning or an end; they are continuous.

As I sat sipping my morning tea and watching the sunrise this morning, I felt the urge to share a few insights and suggestions from my clients’ journeys of seeking purpose in their lives.

Many of my clients’ stories began with the nagging question that seemed to follow them wherever they went: “What is my purpose?” As they navigated through the diverse chapters of life, this elusive question remained a constant companion, lurking in the shadows of their thoughts and experiences. It whispered softly during moments of introspection, growing louder in times of uncertainty and transition. The search for answers to this existential riddle gradually transformed from a mere curiosity into a deep-seated longing for clarity and direction. Do you know this search?

These interactions with my clients led to this five-step process that allows us to gradually discover and engage with our purpose in life. At the least, I want to offer insights into the actions and realizations that ultimately guide us toward a deeper understanding of purpose. They are written from the client’s perspective, revealing points they were sharing with me.

Observe and Reflect

“As I began reflecting on my passions and interests, I realized I had always been drawn to helping others. The joy I felt when I could support someone in need was indescribable. It felt like I was tapping into something more profound and significant, and I knew I had to pursue it further.” So, the first step to discovering more about your purpose in life is to reflect on your passions and interests.

Recognize Your Strengths and Talents

Never underestimate your strengths and talents. “The best things happen when you open yourself up to acknowledge that you are powerful and robust, and as I explored mine, I discovered that I had a knack for connecting with people and empathizing with their struggles. It became clear that this was a gift that I needed to share with the world.” Make no mistake: You have strengths and talents too; you just need to recognize and highlight them.

Explore Your Core Values

The third step led me to explore core values. I realized that compassion, integrity, and personal growth were at the heart of everything my clients did. “I wanted my life’s work to embody these values, and I knew I had to find a way to integrate them into my purpose. Writing these values down in a journal helped to sort my thoughts on the matter.”

Embark on New Experiences

“Next, I began seeking experiences that aligned with my passions, strengths, and values and found activities that fit perfectly. Finally, I started volunteering at a local nonprofit, where I could use my talents to help those in need. These experiences filled me with a sense of purpose and happiness I had never known.” Though this step may look different for you, it is a crucial one—this is a step in which we apply and translate ideas and feelings into real-life experience—and that’s where miracles happen and insights are revealed.

Hone Your Purpose

Through my clients’ journeys, I've learned that these steps aren’t a beginning or an end; they are continuous. "Finding my purpose, I realized that it’s not a one-time event but a lifelong journey. As we grow and evolve, our purpose may change or deepen, and it’s essential to remain open and adaptable to those shifts.”

Now, I invite you to embark on your own journey to self-discovery. Reflect on your passions, strengths, and values; seek out experiences that align with them. Discovering your purpose is a lifelong process, and it’s never too late to start.
