Have you ever felt that whatever lousy habit you try to break, you keep on relapsing? Do you tend to sabotage work opportunities and relationships? Are relationships a source of distress for you? Do you sometimes feel your body is startled without any apparent reason? Given the situation, have you heard from other people that you are overreacting? (and, of course, this made you even more reactive). Are you far too familiar with feelings of anxiety and recurrent low mood? Or, in other moments, are you shutting off and experiencing a sense of numbness, detachment, or not even being fully present in your body? Trauma therapy can help!

It can be daunting figuring out where to begin when finding a counselor or even if you need a counselor. Whether you are going through day-to-day challenges, or you just feel off, we all need a safe space from time to time to explore and gain perspective on what we are experiencing. I seek to provide my clients a safe space to be human, with all the fears, imperfections and struggles that come with that. I help clients through life changes, and I help clients understand life experiences impact our identities and core beliefs.

I work with adults and teenagers struggling with anxiety, depression, anger management, low self esteem and personality disorders. I help clients work on thought distortions at the roots of their distress which helps alleviate their strong negative emotions (worry, shame, guilt, sadness, self-loathing etc.). Most of my clients see an easing of symptoms within the first month and sustained improvement thereafter.

Everyone has their own unique and complex story and experiences, struggles, fears and painful feelings. These emotional experiences and inner needs are affected by your personal background, life experiences, and various interpersonal traumas. These need to be listened to and understood. Psychotherapy is a very safe and powerful space. It is also a collaborative process between you and me. It can help you better understand your own set of needs, build a more flexible psychological strength to accept yourself, and discover your inner strength to bring about change for yourself.

I am deeply passionate about helping those who feel lost or overwhelmed when faced with uncertainty or challenging life transitions. I work with adults, kids and teens struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, loss, and change. My clients are often living in a state of stress and survival and are stuck in cycles of fear, overthinking, and self-doubt. If this sounds familiar, I can help you to feel safer, calmer, and more self-assured. I also have a special interest in addressing the deeper more complex work of trauma and attachment wounds which seem to be at the root of so many afflictions associated with anxiety and low self-worth.

I work with people who are feeling the effects of adversity such as stress, transitions, loss, or trauma. The type of adversity my clients have been through is often complex and multilayered. It is not necessarily a single event that is causing distress, but a series of past or ongoing events. Humans are brilliant at adapting through adversity, and over time, these adaptations can become practiced patterns. When the patterns outlive their usefulness, however, they can become a source of anxiety, depression, overwhelm, or distress—to me, these are symptoms, not the problem themselves.

I'm a trauma-informed therapist using a relational approach to help client transform unhelpful patterns, live more freely and fully, find lasting joy, and build satisfying relationships. In you I see a unique and complex person - your individualised temperaments, feelings, relational patterns, and unmet needs. In therapy, we dissect your distress from a compassionate angle and fathom how the past is causing the present difficulties. Positive changes follow as we get to express what was repressed, hence a freedom to make self-directed choices in life. I'm trilingual and speak English/Cantonese/Mandarin.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
