Small groups facilitated by bereavement practitioners via Zoom or in person. We have found that there is huge power and healing when group members share experiences and feel heard and validated by others. Within group sessions we share our knowledge about the bereavement process, models of bereavement, strategies that others have found useful and aim to bust some of the unhelpful myths around what grief should look or feel like and how long it should last.. Contact us for information about where and when groups that fit your circumstances are running.

Hi, I am Caroline and I have chosen to specialise in working with bereavement because it brings unique, unanticipated challenges and losses that are often misunderstood. There are many incorrect and unhelpful assumptions about what grief should look or feel like and how long it should last. These ideas, alongside the impact of grief on every corner of life and identity, and experiencing confusing and intense emotions, can cause people to feel worried, alone and overwhelmed. My aim is to share my experience, knowledge and understanding of the bereavement process, and what has been of help to others, to support and reassure you.

90 minute sessions. Same time, place, and people. A space to better understand what troubles you with the support of peers, using what happens in the group to better understand the relational patterns which impact our lives. Group members often come with a range of experiences and difficulties, finding a sense of community and understanding between one another. They often find deep connections with one another, despite potential misgivings about opening up in front of others. I am there to help the group to think about what may be going on for the members and the group in the moment.

I co-run this quarterly group with Steven Eserin. This is a space where you can take time to really explore aspects of yourself at depth with the support of peers and two experienced facilitators. It is a place where you can be supported to challenge yourself to come into contact with others and yourself authentically. The groups are usually no more than 7 people. I work with clients who struggle with a range of issues from relationship challenges to historical sexual abuse. I work with you at your pace in a supportive, non-directive way. I won't ever tell you what to do as I trust that you can come to your own answers with the right support. You may be seeking clarity about a challenging decision to be made or you might want to explore what is blocking you from reaching your potential. It might be that you are lacking in confidence generally and you'd like to get to know who you are and start to believe in yourself. Perhaps you lost your way and you are experiencing an existential crisis.

The aim of the group is to help you start being the mother, partner, and friend you always imagined you would be before exhaustion, resentment, and overwhelm took over. Put Yourself First is about acknowledging your right as a human being to be healthy and happy, and a reminder that you are a role model, and I don't know any Mum who doesn't want that for their children.

If you've noticed you're not feeling the same joy you used to and you're worrying about things you didn't used to but you're not sure anyone can help counselling really is the first step towards feeling so much better. I know my own counselling journey changed my life and that is why I am so passionate about what I do. When we understand where our negative patterns stem from we can change our whole lives and break the cycle for our own children. There are reasons why you are struggling and together we can figure out why you are so stuck. Life can feel so much better and this really is the first step.

If you've arrived here, you are already thinking about counselling. You might feel depressed, anxious or overwhelmed and finding it difficult to cope with the challenges of life. Perhaps you have experienced a recent loss, had a sudden change of circumstances or are struggling with relationships. Maybe you don't even know what's troubling you. Research shows positive change happens when there is a good match between client and counsellor. It’s difficult to choose a counsellor or know what to expect from counselling without having a face-to-face meeting. This is why I offer a reduced rate intro session of £15 where we can meet

Creative adjustement is at the centre of any change - I am able to bring years of experience as a creative therapist, psychotherapist and online counsellor. I have worked online for many years and face to face with adults in the NHS, higher education, wellbeing services and cross culturally/globally.

Group psychotherapy offers a powerful and effective method of tackling relationship blocks and patterns. While members are encouraged to bring in difficulties in their lives from the past and the present, there is also an emphasis on the relationships and dynamics in the group. The group is kept therapeutic and safe by a number of firm boundaries - for e.g. confidentiality. Fees are currently £40 a session, with a minimum of 3 individual assessment and preparatory sessions at £70 a session.

I am a psychotherapist and group analyst and have been a therapist for nearly 30 years in many different settings. In my approach, I am interested in making connections between experiences and difficulties in the present, with events and relationships from the past. In my experience, difficulties people experience as adults can often be part of a repeated pattern. I will be curious about relationships in your life but also the way you relate to yourself and to others. This will include how it is in the therapy relationship - whether individually or group.

At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed, angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

Personal Development weekends are a powerful experience for those wishing to understand themselves through relating to others. As a supportive space to explore personal topics, group weekends also provide opportunity to explore how we make contact with others (& them us), what prevents or encourages us to be part of the group & transferences that may arise. The purpose of the group is raising our awareness of how & who we are in the world. Group therapy ‘works’ by forming solid, genuine attachments and understanding ourselves in relation to others - promoting reflection, self-awareness, connection and growth. Next group - 11th & 12th Nov 2023

Hello, I'm an Art Psychotherapist. Whatever brings someone to therapy, whatever their gender, age, neurodivergence, physical ability, race or social background, I am here to hold a supportive space where they can ask their own verbal and sensory questions and have agency over their own answers. Experiences, challenges and changes when it comes to identity, a loss, physical illness, trauma, relationships or insecure attachments, can sometimes become overwhelming and hard to hold alone. A person may come to therapy with a sense of curiosity, about their journey through life, and how it is affecting their relationship with the present.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in East Sussex?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, postcode, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counselling is typically less expensive than individual counselling, with each session costing on average between £45 to £60. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from £60 to £150. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your group therapy sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for group therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
