What can a therapist help men with, specifically?

Therapy can help men with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, processing traumatic events, relationship problems, substance abuse, grief, and more. Traditionally, men may have been less willing to go to therapy or to open up about their feelings, but these challenges exist regardless of gender. A therapist may be able to help men who are not used to talking about their emotions learn how to open up and how to be more vulnerable.

When should men seek therapy?

Nearly everyone goes through times in life when they might benefit from talking to someone about their problems and having a professional help them create a plan for improvement, and men are no exception. If someone experiences persistent and negative moods or feelings that interfere with everyday life, it may be a good time to look for help.

Are there therapy types best suited for men?

Therapy is not gender-specific, and can be beneficial for any individual. The type of therapy best suited to a man will be that which addresses his concerns and needs. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a common and evidence-based approach. It focuses on identifying dysfunctional thoughts and replacing them with healthier and more realistic ones. Other common approaches include dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), which teaches emotion regulation and distress tolerance, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility.

How do you recognize a good therapist to help with male issues?

Many therapists include treating men as an area of expertise. For men who are not used to opening up about their feelings, it can be helpful to find someone with previous experience treating men. A major test of whether a therapist is a good match is whether the client is able to build a trusting connection with them and feel safe and comfortable discussing personal matters.
