Hi, I’m Bob, I’m a calm, straightforward person and I offer a supportive space to encourage you to meet your full potential, live your fullest life and ultimately be who you really are. Sometimes in life we develop patterns which, though once necessary ways of being, have now outgrown their original purpose and can begin to get in the way of us living a vibrant and authentic life. I’ll meet you as a real person and together we can build a genuine relationship where these patterns can be understood, ultimately giving you more choices over your life and a space to heal.

As a qualified Counsellor I am able to help with issues such as anxiety, depression, bereavement and addictions amongst others. However, my Person-Centred approach does not exclude other problems or issues which may affect us at some time in our lives and I work with each individual to deal with the issues affecting them. I am trained in an “Integrative” style which means I can choose from a range of ways of working. This could include, for example, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Gestalt, using elements of creative therapies or Transactional Analysis (TA). We can decide between us which approach works best for you.

In a session with me, I'll listen very carefully to the words you use and how they convey the feelings and thoughts that you express. I'll use my skills and experience to help you tell your story in a way that helps you to make sense of what has happened and what is happening to you. I'll ask you questions - lots of them, not because I need to know the answers to them, but to help you to think about yourself, your situation and your relationships in ways that you may not have thought about; to help you learn about yourself; and to help you find out who you have been, who you are now, and how you want to be in the future.

I am a counsellor working in Cardiff and Swansea with individuals who wish to improve their existing relationships or bring new ones that they need into their lives. Are you feeling unsupported in life or lacking connections with people who really understand you? Do you wish you had closer relationships, more people to share your innermost thoughts with, or more authenticity where people know the “real” you? You may have been harmed by previous relationships, perhaps even by narcissistic abuse, and this has knocked you off course?

When we feel stuck, experience difficult emotions, or the challenges we have are distressing, finding a space to work through and move beyond what has led you to experience those difficulties can feel overwhelming in itself. Through working together with you, I look to create a space where you can explore, make sense of and manage distress, address challenges and build psychological well-being, while supporting you to build confidence to move beyond your difficulties.

Hi, I am Max ( Qualified Person Centred Therapist) and I know from my own experience, that life can sometimes be a struggle. Events and experiences can leave us feeling lost, isolated or directionless . At such times, reaching out for help can feel very difficult and it is important that your search leads you to someone you feel you can trust . Counselling is an opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings ,which might be affecting many different areas of your life. With careful and empathic listening, I endeavour to support you in finding your own way through what is often too complex and difficult to manage alone.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
