Whatever the issues and problems we have to face, one question seems to come up whether we are aware of it or not, which is how much if any control do we have over the way we feel, especially when we feel very powerful or overwhelming emotions. Usually the bad things happen (or are said) when we are out of control and completely in the grip of our feelings of anger, jealousy, fear, lust, greed etc. However trying to remove or erase these feelings, an obvious and often tried solution doesn’t seem to work that well, usually they squirt out and can be even more damaging by being denied and buried.
I have helped people explore and think about past events and people that may be contributing to their present difficulties, often the causes of feelings such as anxiety or sadness are buried in the past and may seem unconnected with how things are now, making those connections and putting difficult or painful memories behind us is usually very helpful
It seems that many of our issues as humans are related to how we see ourselves and relate to others, and especially how we can (or can’t) affect other people and events around us. This could be small personal interactions with friends family or strangers, or the bigger issues that affect us all like the lockdown, climate change, racism etc.
