There are many reasons why we may find ourselves considering accessing counselling support throughout our lives. You may have a clear sense of the support you are looking for and the difficulties you are facing. Alternatively, you may just feel in your gut that something is not right. Perhaps you are realising that having a better understanding of yourself, your relationships and the impact of your environment would help you live a more fulfilled life. I am experienced in working with a wide range of issues from anxiety, stress, trauma and grief to confusing thoughts, life transitions, depression and difficulties in relationships.

I specialise in working with couples and individuals, and regularly work with clients in areas including: communication, affairs and infidelity, blended families, bereavement (loss and grief), embedded trauma, depression and anxiety. In my practice, I endeavour to work with clients in an empathic, collaborative and non-judgemental way. My integrated approach uses systemic theory (including exploring your thought processes and present situation) and psychodynamic theory (historical exploration linking to unconscious thoughts and behaviour). I also apply aspects of emotionally-focused therapy (EFT); and trauma focused therapies.

I offer a confidential, safe space to talk about those issues that are currently causing you concern and emotional pain. It can help to talk to an independent, qualified person when we have run out of ways of helping ourselves. It may be that you feel that you keep repeating the same mistakes in relationships or you can't find the enthusiasm to make the most of life, or problems such as anxiety and low self esteem are holding you back. You may feel that you would like to have greater insight into who you are or work out how you want your life to be.

Many people come to therapy needing support but not being sure how therapy can help. Life may have become difficult to cope with or feel unhappily limited. You may be seeking to understand why things are the way they are; you may be uncertain about what changes are needed, or your capacity to make them; perhaps you just need to talk to someone not directly involved in your situation. My approach is designed to meet all of these concerns, beginning with supportive listening, facilitating insight into your situation, and ultimately supporting you to grow and nurture your inner resources to meet the challenges you face.

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I work on an open ended basis with adults and adolescents over the age of 16. I work within a relational modality where we think together about the present dynamic in the therapeutic relationship and how the past may have contributed to your current way of being in the world. My extensive, psychoanalytically informed training means I do not endorse or encourage any particular lifestyle, or spend too much time adhering to labels.

Hello, my name is Colette. There are certain times in our lives when we find ourselves stuck. Troubled feelings and thoughts are important sign-posts and offer a route to a happier and richer state of mind – if you’re able to work through them successfully. It is often helpful to have someone other than family and friends to discuss your thoughts and make sense of them in a structured way . I approach my work with warmth and compassion and am experienced in a wide range of issues.

Life certainly has ups and downs and the downs can be hard to navigate alone. Perhaps you don't feel right, your relationships might be suffering, you may feel exhausted from trying to maintain a positive side. Maybe you keep doing the same things over and over but cannot seem to break the cycle. I believe we all have the capacity to help ourselves through much of this but, in an increasingly complex and busy life where we are ‘always on’, there often feels like there's little time available to focus on 'me'. Counselling gives you the valuable space and time to find your way in a supported and non-judgmental environment.

My clients often feel painfully stuck in some way and that's why they come to me. Problems become overwhelming. For instance, being unhappy in a marriage; having a serious illness and dealing with its effects; feeling low and not understanding why; dealing with divorce; having problems with one's children and not being sure how to manage; wanting to move forward in life but just not managing somehow; work issues - struggles with colleagues, dissatisfaction with a career. Anxiety, depression and confusion usually accompany these challenging life situations.

Hello, my name is Xenia and I am passionate about helping you be the best version of yourself. Making the first step towards therapy takes courage and I am proud of you for getting started! Life has it’s challenges and I have certainly had my own over the years. Sometimes we just need support from someone that isn’t family or a close friend; Someone who we can trust that they will hold space for us in order to process certain events, or, a confidential objective party that will listen, without judgement, so we can make sense of ourselves and the world around us.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
