Are you concerned that your use of substances or problematic behaviour is getting out of control and is causing problems in your life? Or are you worried that you will not be able to cope without them, even though you would like to cut back or stop? Do you feel locked into thinking styles which are starting to dominate your life such as anxiety or depression and don't know what to do? Imagine if you could regain control of your life and situation so you felt happier, and were no longer dependant or worried about your substance use or problematic behaviours? Recovery is possible but sometimes we need a bit of help to get there

I'm experienced working with adolescents (16+), adults and older adults, including people in midlife, and those experiencing life transitions.
Sometimes life's difficult. Whether it’s an overwhelming crisis, or a slow realisation that things aren't right, we can often end up feeling stuck or that life isn’t what we intended. That’s when counselling can help. As a psychodynamic counsellor, I believe our past experiences often have an effect on our present-day life and relationships, sometimes causing us to get stuck in unhelpful patterns. By working through some of those experiences in counselling it can help us understand how they might be affecting us now and use those insights to make positive changes.

Welcome! Talking is a wonderful way to share what’s on your mind. You may not even know what is bothering you, but by talking, it helps to get in touch with your emotions and make sense of your thoughts. Changes are often small but can be significant. Speaking with someone who is really listening and can offer a non-judgemental space to fully express yourself, improve your self awareness, and accept you for being you, can help!

Looking for therapy can be daunting, whether you are considering it for the first time or perhaps seeking a new perspective. Together we can illuminate and explore what is happening for you and my hope is to be present as you cultivate self-awareness, compassion for the self and a deeper understanding around your responses and reactions, challenge unhelpful core beliefs and thought patterns, and process or reframe experiences, events or feelings from the past. My work is collaborative, compassionate, person-centred and trauma responsive, and I can hold a space for you while you heal, grow or change.

Is everything okay?....... This can be a difficult question to answer. Our default response is often "yes", but deep down, for a lot of us, that's simply not true. Often we struggle to verbalise it, can be exceptionally good at denying it even exists or spend copious amounts of emotional energy keeping it at bay. Perhaps you know why you don't feel okay and perhaps you don't. Either way, I can help. I offer a safe, confidential space to allow you to explore any issues you may be experiencing. Perhaps you’re a teenager or young adult, who experiences physical symptoms of anxiety (such as stomach aches or racing heart), which make you want to avoid certain situations. Or maybe you’re a parent or guardian, eager to get the best support for a loved one who struggles with anxious thoughts or behaviours. Rest assured, you’ve come to the right place. I care. My interest in providing timely treatment for difficulties such as these is the reason why I founded Flourishing Futures Psychology. I too was prone to getting tangled up with anxiety when I was younger, so I know how it can try to trip you up.

Teen Counsellors

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
